Porcupines
« on: November 28, 2006, 06:32:51 PM »
About 35 years ago, I was out in area near my hometown of Grenfell, SK, called the "Pipestone", hunting bush partridge (Ruffed Grouse).  I heard a rather disturbing noise that I could only describe as what a duck would sound like if it was being tortured.  I eventually found two porcupines up in some willow trees.  They were adult.  They were in separate trees, but only a couple of feet apart.  I presumed they were "dating".  I have never heard this sound since, nor have I run across anyone who has.  Weird, to say the least.
If there ain't a gun range in heaven, then I'm goin' to hell!!

About 35/40 years ago I was bird hunting in Michigan. Three porkies were heading for the same hole in a tree. Its been awhile but it could be much like a duck on a bad day. Shot 2 of the porkies off the tree and cleaned them up taking the saddle and hind quarters. Gave them to a friend who had his inlaws over for rabbit, which they loved. Then he had me and the mrs.over. We ate several over a few years.

a few years ago, took my youngest to Sugar Island fishin' and campin'..., an island in the St.Marys river just offshore St. Ignace Michigan.....the short story...we had an adult porky walk up to my truck at dusk, I had slowed thinking it was a small bear cub, he was so big he could almost look in standing on all 4s! Quills in the 2' range for sure! We left him alone.... ;D

My son-in-law, grandson and I were quail hunting last month in the sandhills northwest of Maljamar,NM. We were easing down a two track when my son-in-law said "what is that orange ball up there?" I couldn't see anything so I told him to drive up a little. In just a few yards I could see a porcupine waddling along beside the road. When got beside him he stopped and looked at us. This was the first porcupine either of them had ever seen. I have found them in this area before. Why would a pocupine choose to live here where there are no trees? There is only shinnery oak which gets about two feet tall and mesquite bushes that get to eight and some times ten feet tall and hardly any water.

Scouts have always had them in the high country of New Mexico's Philmont Ranch.  Boys will be boys and pee all over things.  Porkies there will eat the leather off of the boots to get to the salt.  You can see where the boys have been by where the trees, side of outhouse, shed walls, etc. have been gnawed or are almost in two.

Just a guess, but that noise you hear is probably the pain of being in "Porker Love".  Take a quill or two while in the old "infragate delicto" and let the wounded soul resound.

If you are around a lot of them watch out they will eat fan belts, brake lines, and heater hoses.
