22" .308?
« on: November 28, 2006, 07:31:18 AM »
I've been thinking of getting a 22" standard barrel .308 fitted to my Handi frame. I'm already set up to load for it and I like the economy of being able to use surplus components to put my loads together.

I'm interested in hearing what anyone has to say about their .308 Handi's regarding accuracy,... loads,...whatever.

i've never loaded for a .308 in a Handi'; but i've loaded for it in other rifles.    the best powders i've found are Alliant Rel-15,   Winchester 748,   and Accurate Arms 2520.    i've used bulk powder wc-846 in the .223's i've loaded, and in .22-250's for a friend which is Very Similar to what the .308 likes in Hodgdon's BL-C(2) powder.

i recommend Winchester brass and their standard rifle primer.

There is no reason why a 308 should not be accurate. The 308 cartridge design has proven to be very accurate.

The 22" barrel in no handicap neither in a hunting rifle, though I would rather have a 24" on a Handi.

The problems with the Handi is that you never know how good a chamber and throat it has, and if the barrels bore is the same size from one end to the other, that is .308". These things will determen the accuracy of the rifle.

The lock up is another Item that could cause trouble in the high pressure 308.
Nothing is cast in stone. Prudence in handloading is advised.

It is strange that non has responded to your inquirey. As a non owner of a 308 Handi I can only advise of what I have read in these pages on 308 Handi's.

I looked back 20 pages last night for posts on the .308 Handi for northjdr, I found one that relates to this thread. Maybe northjdr will post it if he still has the link.

EDIT: I just checked back 38 pages, found a couple more, one on factory and one on handloads.

I don't have a 308 in a Handi, but I am a big fan of the service cartridge. From what I have read most seem to have the best fortune with the 22" Bull Barrels on the Survivor models ,also availible through the barrel program.
It's a great cartridge in my book and an old favorite.

Yeah,.... I was kinda wonderin' about that also,... I was like,... "Don't evahbuddy speak at once, now."

As mentioned, I'm looking at the .30 caliber Handi's because of the availability of surplus compenents. I've got a few thousand military FMJ's sitting in there and I need another platform to use them in.

It's either a 30-30 or a .308. The power level is incidental. Mainly, I'm interested in what types of accuracy people have obtained from each in a Handi.
