handi barrel suggestions

Quick , i tried the polishing of the chamber on my handi .223 in order to eliminate the ejection hang up problem..It worked like a charm..thanks for the info..Now , I am wanting to buy another barrel in a larger caliber for hunting hogs , whitetail and larger game animals..I already shoot a .270 but would like any suggestions on a bigger load for my handi..be sure to specify barrel type also..you guys are the experts so i thought i would ask..this handi rifle deal can get addictive..i can already tell..

If by "bigger load" you  mean you want a bigger caliber, the .45-70 never fails to impress folks, it's one of the most fun AND accurate calibers of all and the only "bigger" rifle round is the .500S&W which may or may not make you happy, depending on whether you handload or not. The .45-70 comes in 2 barrels lengths, the 22" Handi and the 32" Buffalo Classic. The .22" is the more economic of the two since it comes with sights, the BC barrel is bare unless you have them add sights which makes it considerably more expensive.

Of course this is just a start, there are several other bigger calibers, but everyone needs a .45-70!! ;)

Absoutely, get a 45-70. You can shoot the realitively mild factory loads, or load yourself up some real sledgehammers. these things show no mercy.

Yeap I also second the 45-70. It's on my soon to be fulfilled list.
But a 500S&W would be a good one too, if you handload.
For that matter, what about a 12ga Tracker 2 barrel? Nothing like throwing large hunks of lead around 8)

Well...you didn't say how much bigger...so...I would opt for a new Whelen barrel...whenever they get them...and possible one of the new 444 Marlin barrels...early next year...I too like the 45-70 and agree everyone should own atleast 1 of them......but these two are kinda special...and folks have been getting some great velocities out the the Whelen here lately...Of course since you already have a 270 Winchester...the other perrinial favorite the 280 remington...is just too close...unless you have it rechambered to Improved- improved...this will take it up a notch or two...and the 30-06 Handi...just doesn't offer too much more either...for me......Now...if you want something really special...you could always oder a 25-06 barrel and have it turned into a true custom Handi by Wayne York of Oregunsmithing...they aren't cheap...but you get your moneys worth...and then some...I've got a couple done by him...a 26" 338-06 A-Square...and a 26" 270 Winchester...both excellent calibers to own ofcourse...or you could get a 38/55 target barrel fitted...and have a 405 Winchester built just as Quickdtoo did...always a good choice as well...Quick also has had the 280 II and the 338-06A-Square done along with his 405 Winchester by Wayne...and is enjoying them immensely...So...Your choices aren't limited to just 1 or 2 of them...and since your on your way to becoming a Handi-holic...you probably will wind up with more than 1 of them... Sooner or later......;D

i have been asking around about the 45-70 deal...Is the 45-70 buffalo classic barrel only used with open sights?..Can I buy a 45-70 barrel that is equipped with a scope rail?...Also , this .405 winchester also interests me..Could someone please elaborate a little more on it...thanks guys...cap

The BC barrel comes with no sights, it's drilled and tapped just like all H&R rifle barrels, it has a 3/8" dovetail slot for mountng the front sight. You can order it with the Williams WGRS($18) or FP-Target($60) peep sights and/or a scope rail($13-$18). H&R uses a hooded Lyman 17A front sight w/inserts if you want that on it, don't know what they sell it for, it's $27 elsewhere. I don't know if they offer a dovetail blank, but you could ask, Marbles makes a nice one if they don't offer one.

Any rifle barrel that H&R offers can be ordered with a scope rail or sights, the 22" .45-70 barrel comes w/sights, order a scope rail in addition to the sights for $18 extra which includes a hammer extension. Or you can order the rail and extrension for nothing extra with no sights on the barrel.

The .405 Winchester would be a rechamber and rebore by a gunsmith after you buy a .38-55 barrel, cost for that service would be about $300.

The .45-70 BC or .38-55 Target barrels are $131 shipped and fitted.

quick has described the 45 acc barrel well.  With full BC gun, it comes with the williams peep and the lyman globe sights.  And, it comes with a nice real walnut stock/forend.  These two are compelling reasons to get the BC as a complete gun rather than an acc barrel. 

Also, you can not shoot an open sight barrel on a monte carlo stocked frame.  You just cant get you eyes down low enough to comfortably shoot it.  So, what you need is one frame with straight stock for you soon to be 3 open sight barrels, and one frame with monte carlo stock for your soon to be 3 scoped barrels  ;D
