Bow for Hogs???
« on: November 27, 2006, 12:21:27 PM »
I'm thinking of going on a hog hunt in Feb/Mar I have all range of gun choices to take, but have been thinking about going with my bow. I was just wondering if a bow set up fro whitetails (70lbs draw, 100 grn broadheads fixed blade non replaceable, carbon arrows) Would this be suitable for hogs? Would I need to go to a bigger broadhead? Or maybe not shoot carbon arrows? Just wanted to know what y‘all think, or shoot. All the information I have right now about the hunt is that they hunt over feeders, from tripods, and around 200 lbs live weight razorback hogs.

Thanks,
IATRKYHNTR,
Nathan

Your set up should be fine. On the other hand, you may want to study up on the anatomy of hogs. Their heart and lungs are more forward and lower than a deer and well protected by their shoulder and a heavy shield. A broadside, behind the shoulder shot rarely takes them down quickly. The last one I took with a bow was a quartering away shot behind the ribs that managed to get through to the lungs and heart. He still went 40 yds in heavy brush. I have also had good luck with neck shots.

there are alot of hogs taken with a bow, sounds like your hunting from a stand which is good.remmeber hogs can be pretty rough animals, even wounded. would;nt recommend bows when hunting over dogs.
no hog to big for our dogs

Thanks for the input guys...

Wynn... I'm a butcher by trade, and have cut up more them my share of hogs, both wild and domestic, got a pretty good idea of there anatomy. I figured a quartering away shot would be my best bet.
