Stinkin' Elk....
« on: November 24, 2006, 05:11:02 AM »
Well, this is the last weekend for elk here in Montana.  I have put more miles on my legs than I care to think about and I'm headed out again today with my handi-whelen.  Needless to say I'm getting frustrated.  Sorry to be a whiner ::)

Wish me luck!

Hi Matt, I felt the same way after just 3 1/2 days in Maine at my camp, only got to see deer on the side of the highway at night on the way up. My buddy from Maine who joined me at camp the 2nd day there either kicked\out and heard deer or sat and watched does at about 35 yards (+/-) with no antlerless tag, at the last minute of legal shooting time they spooked and he did see a LARGE flag to the right of the does in the small clearing he was watching but no shot. I had an antlerless tag and did not see or hear any deer at all while hunting. I hunted in his general direction a couple of times (driving is illegal in Maine) with no luck at all and one time watched about 20 turkeys feed by in a line at the edge of the stream that is my back property line. Fall turkey hunting is only allowed with a bow in Maine otherwise I would have tried to take a head off one with my 45-70 Handi for the Thanksgiving table. I also saw another porcupine in what I refer to "The Porcupine Tree" out towards the NW corner of the property. I have shot 3 in that tree over the last 3-4 years, shot a monster porky last year during deer season, shot it with my 45-70 last year but passed on this one, I now think I should have shot it, they are destructive to trees and kill them with their feeding habits. I did not want to scare any deer in the area since I still had a few hours left that day and the next morning, Thanksgiving day, to hunt. I also found the last bits of a porcupine tail and backbone in another part of my property, no idea how that one died. Oh well, if I get up for ML season I might just shoot the new resident of "The Porcupine Tree" with my TC Renegade 50 caliber. If not perhaps while coyote hunting this winter with my .22 Mag or perhaps my .17 HMR to try it. Anyway Matt, don't give up, stay at it until the last rays of legal light and at least you will have memories, those last forever and are usually the best part of hunting anyway....<><.... :)

P.S. my memories so far this year, with no deer hanging - my buddy from Millinocket did bring some fried backstraps and heart to camp with him from a week ago up at a relatives camp on Mooshead Lake and we had them as appertizers before a spagetti dinner, the stuff we did not finish we put in the garlic and hamburg sauce for the spagetti. The good old times at hunting camp with good old friends, it dosen't get any better than that!!! I was a bit frustrated yesterday as I left camp for the 350 mile ride home but even today, one day later, as I look back at it I am thankful and grateful to God for my time there and am ready to return...memories, like many things, Thanksgiving leftovers for example, are usually better the next day....

Good luck Matt, you'll have your barrel on Monday, hope ya have an elk, too!! ;) I know how ya feel, the last elk I got was in '95, we always hunt hard, all day, seldom come back for lunch, don't want to spend the time and energy to eat in camp, 8 days every year until 2001 which was the last year I hunted elk cept for a 1 day muzzleloader hunt in 2003. You can cover a lot of ground looking for em and hoping for a convergence!! ;)

No luck, legs are tired though....

Running out of ideas, I'll be at it again tomorrow.  It's amazing how a large group of big animals can hide so effectively!

what is the weather like?   i've seen some good stuff in print re:  hunt the north side of a hill if it's too hot; hunt the lee side of the hill when it's windy; hunt 'em high before the snow falls heavy; use a cow call to pull in a bull....................etc.etc.etc.   i can only guess that some of the 'training films' would have good hints when it's tough year after year.

it's hard for me to imagine anything more exciting than trying to 'drill' an elk, however!

i hope it happens for you!

Thanks guys, you're all more sympathetic than my wife!

The weather has been too nice lately, every elk I've seen has been on the top of a mountain.  I absolutely love hunting them, it was alot more fun during bow season, vocal, mobile, and stupid.  Now they are on survival mode and just hiding.

Right now it is absolutely dumping snow, good!  We'll see how it goes this afternoon.

I did not have much luck this weekend, one long shot @ a small mule buck, I got fooled shooting across a valley. on the upside I ended up with a cow elk quarter.

Last weekend of regular deer gun season here in WI. Lots of hunting and no shooting. Taking today off to rest my tired body. Try again tomorrow, the last day. I feel your pain.

Tired legs again!  Too bad cows aren't legal, on two occaisions this afternoon I had a lone cow stand broadside at 20 yards.  I tried and tried to grow antlers on them but it didn't work.  One more day!  I think I'll go back to that same area, where there are cows there should be a bull somewhere!

My last weekend too, got my WT doe with the #3 Ruger 375Win. No contest.  My friends got 2 big WT bucks and a big cow Moose. They were out again this pm to look for a wounded buck and got another other one besides. I stayed where it was warm.

To man handle that moose on the back of the truck was no mean feat, even with 6 guys.

Brutally cold -24C (-11.2F)with the wind chill about -35C.(-31F} all three days no let up.

Fred:
Mount a winch in the bed of your truck. Mine is a 3700 lb Warn Work Winch, and will snatch any deer, elk or moose right off the ground. Since I usually hunt alone it should extend my hunting of heavy game for years.

When I hunt deer alone I use my 84 Jeep wagoneer 4x4. I put a rope sling around the door post and hook on a small come-a-long to drag the deer into the wagon with the back seat laid down. Works pretty slick.

The place we hunt moose is not in my hunting territory, I go there once a year to hunt with friends with a special deer license, they have the two 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel trucks and all these guys are young and strong as ox. They are used to heavy work, as land scaping contactors.

They have a shop with a chain block track to hoist the moose right off the truck ready for skinning. Me the old timer is relegated to keep the big shop stove stoked with fire wood and help a bit with the skinning. Pretty soft touch.

That winch on the back of the truck is a very good idea.

A wench or better known as a lewd woman would be lots of fun in the truck. Did not think you had it in you ??? ??? ???

Now I'm confused, did this conversation start by someone mounting a wench in the back of his truck? If so then I'm getting to old for this site and will have to rest in the rocking chair for a while....<><.... ;)
