Custom Gunsmithing on Browning A-bolts??!!
« on: November 22, 2006, 07:50:02 AM »
Does anyone know of a gunsmith who specializes on or works w/a lot of Browning A-bolt rifles??

I have a Browning Stainless Stalker A-bolt that I would like to have turned into an Ultra Light Weight mountain rifle.
So, I'm looking for a gunsmith for this project, preferably one that specializes, prefers, or at least has considerable experience w/A-bolts.

Any information would be appreciated!

Seems the simpler solution is to get a Titanium A-bolt and be done with it.

I know what you mean w/the suggestion to get the Titanium A-bolt............I would love to have one in .300WSM!!

But this .30-06 rifle has been w/me for about 15 years now, and it has been my "lucky gun", I almost "always" seem to get what I'm going after when hunting with it - deer, caribou, sheep, moose, grizzly bear.  A lot of good, no make that great memories in this one!

Was thinking to just have some drilling here, some shaving there, probably fluting of the barrel, different rings / base, etc.
Currently it wears a Leupold 3X9 compact, could go smaller lighter w/say a straight 4X compact, but I like that 9X for longer shots!! :-)
I'm hoping to bring the over all weight down a couple pounds, at half the cost or less off a new Ti rifle??!!

Any input would be appreciated!
Thank you,
Del

No exact weights but I thought this might perk your ears. I have an A-bolt 2 with 26" tube, factory wood stock and a Varix-2 (the old one) 3-9x in 338 Win Mag. My friend has a Stainless Stalker in 7 Rem Mag, 26" tube and a VX-2 4-12x. His rifle feels heavier to me, and him than my 338 WM. I have toyed with the idea of lightening my bolt knob by drilling it out see pics here

I know that it is on a 700 but I think that it could be done to the A-bolt as well.
