A 99 mystery - again.
« on: November 21, 2006, 03:39:49 PM »
I just bought a Savage 99 today and it does not conform to the usual date schemes so here goes:

12M on the lever boss
1024xxx serial number
model 99F on barrel

Savage Arms Corporation
Chicopee Falls Mass. U.S.A.

308 WIN

Rotory magazine with counter
Checkered walnut stock
gold trigger
color case hardened lever
tang safety
light tapered 22" barrel
80% overall condition

What I've read so far
M on the lever boss                is 1961
sub 1097xxx numbers             was pre 1961
Savage Arms Coporation
Chicopee Falls Mass. U.S.A.      was pre 1961
99F                                      is Feather Weight

Cross over gun?
Worth anything?  I Paid $350.
I aim to please - but often miss.

The price is good unless it was run over by a Mack

Damn, I have a twin to that in a 300. I'm very curious to hear any info on this.

I also keep seeing 99 listings online with the counter missing. Is there something I should be concerened about with counter? Do they break often?

Your riflle's Lever Boss Code and serial number both comply with your rifle being made in 1961.  However, the "Chicopee Fall, Mass." address on its barrel doesn't comply with that mfg. date since Savage moved their manufacturing facilities to Westfield, Mass. (still their current lociation) in 1960.

This is not the first time I've seen situations like this.  Apparently, what someone at Savage did was set this rifle's barrel aside for some reason only to put it back on the assembly line a year or so later and allowed it to be fitted to a just manufactured rifle that needed a barrel and shipped out.

Then, too... close to the 1960 moving date, it is possible the barrel was made BEFORE 1960 since it has the "Chicopee Falls" address on it.  Then it was used in a rifle that was actually manufactured in Westfield a year or two later.

Like one very knowledgable fellla I know sez, "With Savage, you never know for sure"... and that's is a realistic assessment of how these strange situation occur with Savage products of that era.  :)
