BLR /scopes
« on: November 21, 2006, 01:06:08 PM »
I have been thinking on a new straight stock  BLR in 358 Winchester for close range deer and black bear. Do you guys think my leupold vari-x 2x7x33 will balance well on it or should i look at there VXII 1x4x20 or there VXIII 1.5x5x20 I do want to use a scope and and my shooting probibly wont ever go beyond 150 yds  and so far has  never gone beyond 100. What do you think

I've had a compact Vari-X 2-7 on my .308 BLR ever since I bought it in 1983, works very well.

I've been wondering what to put on my 7mm-08. My original choice was a 2X7. But I have one on my .30-06 and have noticed that every time I have shot an animal my shots were at just over 100 yards or less and my scope was always on 7X. I would start the hunt with the scope adjusted to 3 and always turn it up before shooting. I keep telling myself that I will take the next shot at 3 or 4. That never seems to happen. So, now I'm considering the 3X9. Hopefully, I won't have any issues with size.

I'd put your Leupold 2X7 on the BLR, keep it on 2X for most of your hunting, but it you get the chance at a monster buck or bear at 150 yards or more it would be nice to at least have the option to dial it up and place that bullet precisely where you want it to go!!

The BLR's are great and the only lever action that I think looks good w/a scope on top.

Thanks for your replys guys i have decided to go with a leupold 1.5x5x20 with the german #4 recticle. And thats a nice buck Tim.  Please let me ask you guys another question that i posted on another forum. the recent purchase of a 35 whelen has me going with the 358 winchester , i am realy liking the 35 caliber now as i have hunted mostly with the 30/06. I will be only hunting deer and bear hear in upstate NY with this rifle and the only other cartridge concideration was the 308 winmchester.Should i go with my first choice or do you guys think the 308 would be a better choice.I guess i am liking the 358 for two reasonms, first you dont see them much at all hear and second i am a guy who likes to use heavier bullets . Even with my 30/06 i only use 220 grain bullets and i like the 358 for its 200 grain choices which i dont beleive i would have with the 308., or would I?  I  have seen loading data for the 358 200 grain bullet from 2400-2700 fps but how about the 308? I have also seen some factory loading from Conley and other custom ammunition makers using the 250 grain bullets to 2400.  Give me your opinions on both these calibers . I would be reloading my own no matter the choice. Thanks Tanoose

Based on the distance you will be shooting, critters you will be hunting, and scope you are going with.........I would definitely go w/the .358 Winchester.

A friend of mine had an old model BLR in that caliber and he would never sell it to me, dang him  ;), but can't say that I blame him.

Sounds like you are on the way to a great hunting lever-action rifle!!

Best of luck,

Thanks Tanoose! The Leupold VXIII 1.5-5x20 is an exceptionally nice scope, I don't own one, but had the opportunity to handle and look through a new one I bought for a friend, great choice!!

Have a great Thanksgiving!!

I have a Belgian BLR in .308.

I picked up a used VXIII 1.5-5x20 along with low Leupold rings and a 1 piece base.

It is the hot set-up for me. I love it. You will not be sorry... ;D
