I was amazed at the accuracy
« on: November 20, 2006, 05:02:22 PM »
Last Saturday I was at the range and was shooting my Ruger SuperRedhawk off of sandbags.  Using 240gr Hornady XTP factory ammo my best three shot group at 25 yds had all three holes in a tight cloverleaf.  I do have a Millet RedDot on it.  I guess I found the velocity (1350fps) and bullet for my reloads.

congratulations on what i consider the purchase of an excellent revolver.    if you like that 'Super' you'll also like the very similar GP-100 series in the .357 magnum caliber.   very similar lockwork; very similar accuracy ( the gp-100 is usually even better.....); very similar durability.

take care,

I shot a six round group this weekend with my 454 SRH that I could cover with a quarter at 25 yds!!! Yes scoped! Load was 300 gr WFNGC at around 1200 fps! Next load I'm working on is 255 gr SWC at about 1300 fps !  Want to find the sweet spot to make this my Yote load! If it shoots as good as the 300 gr at 25yds I'll start working my way out to 135 yd as it my goal to get 4" at that distance to make it a viable Yote load!

I think the dirty little secret here is that factory revolvers, when benched with a scope or put in a Ransom Rest, are delightfully accurate, as accurate as the expensive 1911 match guns. The last time I benched a wheelgun, it was my scoped S&W .500. It shot into around 2" at 50 yds. For someone who isn't a world class bench shooter, I find this very nice. I paid a good deal of money 30 yrs ago to modify a 1911. It shot into 2 1/2" at 50 yds. in a Ransom Rest.

Hi Tom C:
I really don't think you can classify the 1911 with a factory revolver.

hey, if they had one, for our overly-strong affinity for Rugers, if they had one i say, we could go on the Patch!   but they don't make one, that i know of, so picking one up every now and then is the best way to treat this condition.    hey, i tried to quit.    but the whole thing made me so miserable that i gave in and bought some more!

BTW:   i can't think of a rifle i'd rather carry in the worst conditions than Ruger's Model 77 MkII All-Weather.   i have one in .270 and it'd be my "Worst Bad-Day" rifle if i had to pick one.

take care, mike,

take care, mike,

You are right on with the All Weather Rifle. I just bought one so I dont have to get my purrty wood ones wet. Mine is in 30.06, one of my favorite rounds.  Topped it off with a 3x9 Leupold Rifleman scope.  It has been to cold here to go out to the range and play much.  I might just pile on the clothes this weekend and go to the range for at least a few rounds at 100 yds now that I have it on paper.  How is your accuracy?
