629 underbored?
« on: November 20, 2006, 03:09:31 PM »
Hi all, has anyone had or has a 44mg revolver whose business end of the cylinder is .428? that is, before the bullet enters the barrel?
In other words, the bullet is resized to .428 before entering the barrel, I`ve got a 629 classic in 5" which has that, and it doesn`t look that dirty so as to assume its crud in the cylinder!! Regards, mark

S&W tightened up the tolerances on that dimension with the introduction of the Classic in the 29-5/629-?. Prior to that sometimes the measurement could have been .434" or there abouts. My guns don't shoot any worse because of it nor lead up badly.

What's the bore diameter of your barrel?

Actually, I havent yet miked it, just was surprised one day when having the cylinder out, I tried putting a bullet in the wrong way just to see how tight it left the chamber and was very surprised to see it didnt fit, I tried factory and home cast sized .429 and no way, which made me think for one the pressure level must be higher than normal in the cylinder as it wants to leave, and second, the bullets are resized aprox. .428 before entering the barrel!

I agree the chambers seem to be a bit snug in the front, but the guns shoot well enough that I won't mess with success.
