Any Okies score yesterday?
« on: November 19, 2006, 01:18:28 AM »
The rifle season opener was yesterday here in Oklahoma and I was just wondering if any of the Okies on the board downed one or not. Does and bucks are shootable the first weekend, the second weekend and the last day, bucks only for the rest of the open season. One of each sex takable during our rifle season.
I chose to sit in a three year old stand on the public land yesterday morning hoping that all the hunters would push something my way. The 20 gauge Pardner topped with a Bushnell 1.5-4.5x32 loaded with a 5/8 oz. slug got the nod for this outing. I've been pouring corn at this spot since August. Well sure enough the push worked. An 8-point came up off the creek bank 30 yards to my right and was running wide open, ran straight toward me thru the brush and hit the thick stuff right under me. That was the last I saw of him, but I could hear him keep running until he was out of earshot, he was scared! I never had a shot. That was it for me. I counted 21 rifle shots from 6am to 9am with most being from 7:30 to 8:30. Hunted private land yesterday evening and saw nothing.
Today is full with church and other obligations. Should get to go out and pour corn this afternoon and stalk a little while. I'm off all week tho so it's buck time in the morning. Hogs are always open so I may have some pork backstrap to boot!

We had a nice 10 point taken on our ranch yesterday morn. Other than that no triggers pulled.

I saw some long beards heading to my feeder. 3 ground draggers.

JB does your friend hunt on Cherokee? My buddy is in college and was telling me about a deer he pulled the jawbone on that almost sounds the same.

His college Professor REQUIRED them to work the check station on opening weekend.

I took some friends out and put them on a place that Lik2hunt usually sets, and the guy got 2 shots (both missed) at a nice 8 point, and then a 350 pd. boar came out and he dropped him.I took a 14 yr. grandson of a friend of mine out this eve. and he dropped a 5 pt. in his tracks, and almost connected on another hog that came by. The kid was shaking so bad he could barely stand. It's a picture that I'll remember forever. :) :) :)

My son, Morgan, shot this 145 pound 10 point that scored 122 in Hughes county, east of Calvin on Sunday morning.  It was the 12th buck he saw in two days....

We just got in and my 10 year old son Derek killed a 90 pound (dressed) fork horn off of an alfalfa field with a handi 357..... It has been a good season in our part of Oklahoma. This is his second with the handi this year.

My better half shot a nice 8 point tonight.  Making it 1 for bow, 2 for black powder, 1 for gun.  In case some need extra help, that is TWO more than I got. ;D  it weighed 144 pounds, which is good in Oklahoma.  She even beat me by weight, my biggest is 141.  I think I need to readjust her scopes next year, so that she will be way behind on shooting deer, maybe I will beat her next year. ;) JB

Well I finally did get a buck at about 5:15 this evening. A six point that dressed at 95 lbs. I'm happy. It was the fifth deer I'd seen today and probably the biggest buck actually. The 30-06 Vanguard and a 165gr. balistic tip blowed his chest open on bottom for about the first 4 inches, yea I hit thim a little low thru one leg, blowed the chest and passed thru the other leg.  Left a blood trail like none I or Digger have ever seen. Ran about 50 yards before bleeding out. Pics forthcoming.
Sooo....the buck tag is filled now and I will (hopefully) fill my doe tag this weekend. Took off from work all week to hunt and so any deer works for me. I won't get time to hunt the way I like once I go back to work.
Nice pics and some really nice deer on this thread too! Like someone else already said, kinda surprising considering the drought we've been having for the last couple of years.

Oh yea..........Thanks go out to Digger! ;)  He knows why. ;D

Put another one down yesterday evening and filled the doe tag............barely . She was 38 lb. field dressed, a little doe. It was the last day of gun season here and the last chance to fill the doe tag so she had to perish. The 445 SuperMag made a big hole in her chest from about 90 yards away and she ran about 25 yards before going down. Nice and easy to follow blood trail. Oughta be some good eatin'.
They always look bigger in the scope don't they?

2 shots, 2 deer, you have to like that John, and congratulations. looks as if you will have venison on the table this winter. It sounds as if you guys really have a lot of deer around out there, more numbers than in Maine anyway....<><.... :)
