Remington Rolling Block, what's it worth?

I know this is not much info but I just saw what appears to be an unmarked Remington Rolling Block at a yard sale for an asked for price of $195.00. It has no bluing left with a slightly more than a patina of rust, it appears to be complete except for a groove beneath the barrel in the stock that looks as if a loading or cleaning rod might have gone there. It is approximately 40-45 caliber but I can find no markings, The stock is complete and in poor condition with a steel buttplate.

What is it worth? I have no idea so any thoughts would help. The action is free and seems to solidly lock up and the firing pin (centerfire) appears to be operational, the original sights are present and the bore is rusty. If it is a 45-70 I would like to be able to shoot it, my wife says she likes the looks of it for over the fireplace but I would only like it IF I can shoot it, no matter what the caliber....<><.... :)

If your wife likes it, it can't be that bad. Is it restoreable? As far as the chamber is concerned if it is not a 45-70 you could simply shorten the brass to fit or do a minor ream job. Rusty barrels after being cleaned can shoot pretty well.

Only you can judge if it is worth two bills, sounds like it should be worth less since rolling blocks are not rare. I am not much of a fan when it comes to old beaters.

 Andy, I can not say for sure, But for as I know or think that is a old black powder
 rifle. and my not be a 45 cal. Remington made the roller for a lot countries, diff calibars.
 From your description I don't think it is worth 2 bills I have had 2 model 1902 in
 7mm, One was turned into 45-70, Got stock and barrel from numrick back in the 60's.
 still have the other one never did any thing to it. Best to you Marv.

If your rolling block rifle is totally unmarked as to manufacturer, it may be a military Spanish arsenal product made under Reminton lincense.  The caliber would be .43 Spanish, similar to, but NOT interchaneable with the U.S.  .45-70 cartridge.  Look on the right side of the receiver for an AR marking with a crown.  That indicates it was made during the reign of King Alfonse of Spain in the later half of the 1800's.  A further identifier would be forearm brass escusteon for attaching the forearm to the barrel with a screw.

If you care to post or send me some pictures, I can further identify it for you.  Barrel length? Barrel bands?  Sights?Bayonet attachment?  These are all identifying features of military rolling block rifles.

The price sounds fair, as an action alone is worth more than that to shooters that rebuild the action into BPCR shooters.

Thanks to everyone for the responses and I will return to the sale location (estate/yard sale at a rather nice home) tomorrow and see it it is still there and check it out further.
John, thanks for the info on what to look for, if I do buy it I will post pictures. I do believe it is restorable/shootable if proper ammo can be located or reloaded.
I was all set to pass it up but if it is still there perhaps I can get the seller to accept less for it, it does seem a bit much at the asking price. My wife went out early to the sale and I was home, she called me and said they had an "old musket" for $105, I told her to keep it in her hands until I arrived and  was there within 5-10 minutes. It was not an "Old Musket" and it did look like $105 on the price tag but in reality was $195 so we looked around, bought a couple of things and left. I got a nice small Nicholson triangular fine for gun work for $1, a nice flat 2 sided stone for trigger jobs for $1 and a real nice like new Mikita codless drill with charger, 2 batteries that hold a charge great, a charger, and a case for $35. I wanted to offer him less but it was like new so I paid the big bucks. Well this means myself and my wife will be off to the yard sale again tomorrow. I hope the Rolling Block is still there and he takes an offer....<><.... ;D

P.S. -  it did have a full length mannlicher style forearm and a long rifle vs. carbine style barrel. It also had a rather small rear sight...

P.P.S. - Datil, is your 7mm Rolling Block a 7x57? If so would you be interested in selling it to me? It sounds like the perfect match to my 7x57 Handi and something unusual to carry in the Maine woods for deer and coyote and it would look great to my wife hanging in the house as well so she would not object, a double winner!....<><.... :)

Hello guys, I just returned from the yard sale and the hardware store with fertilizer for the lawn, another job I had not thought of but luckily my wife rememberd( ::)). The Rolling Block at the yard sale was really rough upon second and closer inspection. It had a broken and repaired stock and I did find some markings, it appeared to have something over the word argentina on the barrel over the chamber area. I do believe he is going to end up holding on to it if he continues to ask that price for it, I estimate it's probably worth about $35-$50 to hang on the wall IF someone wanted it. The reciever may be worth more to someone who wanted to build up a rifle on it but that is not of interest to me. The firing pin appearred to be short or have the end proken off also. It is definately a wall hanger only now as the rear of the chamber appears as it was hit with a hammer and knocked just a bit out of round. If I am going to own a gun I want it to be a shooter, even if it only hangs on the wall. Marv I got your message and will be getting back to you today or tomorrow...Thanks....<><.... :)

Not all rollers were blued, most were Black Powder Cartridge guns produced for military all over the world and they are very strong actions.  The action alone is worth $250-350 if complete.

Also, you just might want to post your question on the ASSRA site to confirm.

Thanks Jeff, I went there and in looking through some posts I fiound a guy that has about a dozen frames he will sell for between $50 to $85. The post/inquiry with response was in the gunsmithing section. This now is a moot point, I have agreed to buy and am making arrangements to purchase a rolling block that will make both my wife (and me also!!) very happy, it is a shooter and she is going to love it hanging on the wall, possibly over the fireplace ....<><.... :)
