Custom Remington 1917 Enfield

  I posted that my new 7Mag and me and the didn't agree with each (headache), sooo I traded the ADL for a full Custom Enfield Sporter in 06. The barrel is 24 1/2", nice walnut stock, parkerized finish, recoil pad, Muelleer 3-10X44 scope in Weaver mounts. The had left the trigger original, I just ordered a Timney or the rifle and will have it installed next week. What is the general accuacy I can expect from an Enfield? I know they are built like tanks and the action and barrel are very clean for a rifle of its age. It's a real light weight toooo only 12.6 pounds sure will make a fine carry rifle. I'm taking it to the range after class today I'll let u know how it shoots. Jess

  I have a keeper and the Timney Trigger will make it that much better. I took it to the range yesterday and the rifle is a shooter. I shot 165 PP and 165 PSP BT Privio Partizan loads yesterday and they both shot very well. I topped the rifle with a Mueller 3-10X44 in Weaver bases and rings. After sight in the work began. 1st 3 shot group at 100yds ran 1 3/4" and things got better the next 4 ran no larger than 1 1/2 inches the best right at an inch center to center. Not as good as my Ruger 77 which will shoot an inch group all  day but  not bad for a 99 year old action. The rifle will be getting a new XXX Fancy Walnut stock, rebluded and bedded plus the new trigger and I have a feeling it will be a MOA shooter.  I think I found another close friend.   Jess

These Remington Model 30s (first Remington post WWI commercial US1917 variant) are great old rifles. I found this one obviously customized with real nice rust bluing and pretty good stock work. I know it wasn't hunted with as there are no sling swivels or marks of any kind. It needs some checkering, a recrown, and the bolt "bushed" to center the firing pin impact; the latter 2 are underway now. There's a Timney in there and old school full length barrel bedding.

I have a Winchester Enfield P17 that is customized into a 25-06 benchrest/prarie dog/stationary whitetail gun (14 lbs!).  Here are a couple pics of the gun and my first range efforts with it.  I was shooting behind my house using my ATV seat as a rest and it was a balmy 3 degrees.  5 shot group measures 1.29" with cheap factory ammo (Remington Core Lokt 100gr).  Not bad, I think.  Oh yeah, mine is also topped with a Mueller scope.  I have the 8.5-25X50 Eraticator on it.  My first Mueller scope and so far, I'm impressed.  I really like the illuminated dot.  Havne't put it through its paces yet.

I once had a 1917 Enfield with a 3/18 Ordincane barrel stamp.  Had the barrel cut to 25", restocked, Timney trigger, D&T'ed, polished bolt.  She was a honey.  Would eat up any 06 load you could think of.  Loved the heavy and fast loads more than the lighterweights but shot 150s just fine.  30 years later I replaced the Timney with a Bold Trigger, free floated the barrel and re-scoped it.  Shot even better. 

If you are going to restock it you may wish to think of free-floating the barrel - mine shot better after I did that.  HTH.  Mikey.

I have an Enfield 30/06 with a slick action and barrel.  The barrel is tapered with no sights and has no markings of any kind.  Its sitting in a nice figured Monte Carlo stock which is very closely bedded the full length of the action and barrel.  It came with an old Weaver K4 scope in Redfield rings.  It holds 5 rounds in the magazine and the magazine comes straight foreward from the triggergard with no hump foreward of the magazine.  It originally had a red rubber recoil pad which was deteriorating and I replaced it with a Pachmeyer.  I've ordered a Timney trigger to replace the original two stage trigger.  There are no sight ears or any sign that there ever were any.   Is there any certain way to tell if this is a Remington Model 30 or is it a well sporterized P17?  I've wondered before, but never really knew enough about these rifles to determine.  Thanks.

Whelen Man:  I believe yours is the Model 30.  If there is no sign of the ears being ground off and no markings on the barrel those are two hints but, the magazine floorplate is probably the give-away:  no hump in front of the mag well makes it a M30.  Whenever the magazine floorplate on the M17s was straightened out it added one more round to the mag, making for six rounds but also made it require a specific Timney Trigger - one to fit the M17 with a straightened floorplate.  HTH.  Mikey.

Thanks Mikey.  The magazine on mine will hold 5 rounds and you can push them down about half a round more but cannot get number six in there.   The only marks I see other than the serial # is an upside down E and some tiny letters on the safety lever and a flaming bomb on the left side of the action right where it joins the stock in the middle of the action.  It's either the Model 30 or a very good rework of an Enfield military action.

Whelen Man - hold on there:  did you say a flaming bomb on the side of the action?  That's an Ordinance Stamp, the mark of a military issue rifle.  Sounds like your's is a customization of a M17.  As I recall they had smooth, tapered, unstepped barrels that help with the 'custom' look. 

Kivaari and clattin have a couple of great looking customs.  You can do a lot with a M17, they're great rifles.  JMHO and HTH.  Mikey.

I did a little more research on my rifle on ArmsCollector.com and found out that mine is a military rifle that has been reworked.  It's a 1917 Enfield made by Eddystone in April of 1918.   There's a wealth of information on that site.  Whoever worked it over did one good job.  Barrel is new, stock is new, floorplate and triggerguard is new.  Only thing original is the caliber, action, and trigger.  It would be nice if it were in original dress, but at least it was done with honor.  Thanks for the info guys.
