Barrel swap is not hard with the proper equipment.  I changed out a 270 barrel to 35 Whelen, turned out fine.  Had to get a barrel vise with the metal inserts as I had no luck with the wooden block type.  The barrel nut can be hard to get off.  Tried the wooden block type of vise, barrel kept on slipping.  So I ordered a vise with the metal inserts.  While I was waiting for the barrel vise to come in I stood the barrelled action on end, action down, and put a few drops of Kroil oil around it.  Put a few more drops around it the next day.  Vise came in about three days later.  Put the nut wrench on the nut, bolted the barrel down in the vise, and took a dead blow hammer and hit the wrench a couple of times and the nut came off.  Used a resized piece of brass and a new unfired piece of brass and a go gauage and head spaced it.  Tightened the nut down and took it to the range.  There is a lot of information on doing this on www.savageshooters.com.  I highly recommend you read up on the procedure.  Good luck and keep us posted.

If you decideon the 338-06 I have a NEW A&B barrel for sale.  Gonna go with the 35 Whelen instead.

I have found it much easier to use an action wrench mounted in a regular vise. The barrel vise works but it is a pain. For me it is easier to set the headspace with the action clamped down then screwing the barrel to correct setting.
Using a torque wrench on the barrel nut wrench is very helpful.

Mom, can I use Dad's deer rifle to shot pigeons off the watertower?
