.500 or .510 Whisper question
« on: November 14, 2006, 03:56:39 PM »
Does anyone know what the twist rate on these barrels are?

I am trying to shoot .50 BMG bullets out of a Sharps case, and I need info to make plans for future efforts.

Thanks;
Larry

i believe most of them are about 1:9 or 1:8 twist.i have a 50 alaskan encore barrel ,when ordered i planned on shooting 525 grn cast bullets so i ordered 1:15 .i then had the idea of loading some military surplus 50 bmg noses at low velocity only to realize that i did not have enought twist to stabilize them.i believe the ssk 50 cal whispers are 1:9.hope this helps ,adker

If you call the bullet manufacturer, a friendly customer rep will look it for you. They can recommend muzzle velocities to "shoot" for and maybe powder suggestions. They really do have all this info at their finger tips, and it is up to date.

Take care,

That's exactly what I was looking for.
I have a 1/20" Sharps 2.5" barrel; I can get the 689 grain bullets to about 1085 fps, but some hit full sideways.
I might be able to get them faster and stabilize, but I wanted to shoot subsonic.

Oh well; it's not likely to work out.  Thanks for the info!
