Remington .308 700vsf.
« on: November 14, 2006, 09:33:31 AM »
I recently purchased a remington 700vsf in .308.  I love it.  Put a Sightron 6x24x42 mildot scope on it.  It is a real tack driver.  Ive shot some realy good groups with it.  Some under 1/4inch and all have been with factory ammo.  The last time at the range I was shooting some cheap federal powershock 150grn. bullets and a friend of mine had some hornady 165grn light magnums.  They hit the same hole as the 150grn fed.  I was impressed.  Shot ten shots five of each kind and had a ten shot group of 1/2 inch at 100 yards.  All Ive done to the gun is a trigger job.  Ive been real impressed.  Next step is some reloading equipment.  Cant wait to see what I can do with some consisten hand loads.

The .308 is THE most dependable caliber out there.  You have the right set-up for that caliber and they way you shoot.

in my opinion you have picked up one of the most desireable factory rifles out there.    i wouldn't mind having another Model 700 in .308 Win' and the VSF is one of the best of 'em.

good purchase.

I just picked up a Remington Model 7 in .308 Win. and can't wait to get it to the range.  I fell into instant love when I held it and could not put it down.  I have heard some great things on this rifle and hope they ae all true.  Wish me luck at the range.
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

I got the 700VSF in .308 Win a few years ago.  You're right, it is a tackdriver.  Like you, I had the trigger tuned down but have otherwise done nothing with it.  Regarding reloading, I reckon each rifle has its own likes and dislikes, but mine likes Varget behind a 150 grain Sierra gameking and CCI 200 primers.  Bullet wise I've only used the 150 gr GameKings, Nosler 150 gr ballistic tips, and Hornady 165 grain interbonds (or is it 168 grains?).  Everything seems to shoot reasonably well and some loads shoot very well.  IMR4064 and BL-C(2) also work well.  AA2520 does respectable too.  I think in general the .308 Win is pretty easy to load for.

I havent tried any reloads yet.  Cheap factory ammo is shooting great.  I want to try some Federal Gold Match and some Blackhill Match Grade before I do any reloading.  Thanks for the info.  Cant wait to try it on a deer or a hog.

That's a nice rifle! I am in the market for my first bolt gun. I am left handed and have been using an auto, levers and singles for years. That Remington is one of the ones I looked at because it is one of the few offered in LH. The retail price on Remington's site lists $1,091. If you don't mind me asking...what was the ballpark of yours. Usually, a company website list price can be beaten at a local shop. Again, that's a bold question. If you don't want to reveal that, I understand.

Thanks!

BRL:
I got mine 2 or 3 years ago.  At the time I paid my local dealer $750.  I talked him down a little but he asked that I pay the whole price upon order, rather than 1/2 or 1/3 down.  That was as good or better than I'd have done at GunBroker.com  once you figure in shipping and transfer fees.

Thanks for the tip Sodbuster. I just saw one there for $820 + $25 to ship. I guess I also have to add whatever my local shop would charge to receive the rifle for me.

Thanks!
