Custom FA
« on: November 13, 2006, 10:06:25 AM »
Has anyone sent their FA to a gunsmith to had it modified or made better? Do you skip everything and have the factory do it? OR are they just that good they dont need anything else done to them?

I've done grips on them.  Magna-port does some customizing, with brakes and sights and polishing and so-forth.  Gary Reeder used to do an Ultimate Backup on a fixed sight 83 that was quite similar to what FA will do now with shortened barrels and round butts.

Bottom line is, short of a few things that fall far short of "customs," there just ain't a lot to do to them, and a lot of gunsmiths are reluctant to work on them anyway.  I would be very reluctant myself to do anything that might void the warranty - like let someone else screw up the trigger system, which does happen.

I know there are good personal reasons for customizing an FA, but I could not bring myself to do it. It would be like customizing a Porsche Carrera or coloring a in one of Picasso's drawings. It would be heart breaking.

There are plenty of good options on the FA website that FA can do for you.  I for one would not hesitate to send something as well-made as the FA back there for customizing.  It is cheaper to do this up front, as you save the moolah on shipping and you also don't lose time with the FA once it is in your grimy paw.

Gunsmith Jack Huntington converted FA guns to 475 Linebaugh long before FA did. Jack also was converting FA guns to his .50 JRH(1.4" brass that you can get ammo from Buffalo Bore ammo and shoots also in 500 S&W chamberings) long before FA had their .50 Wyoming chamber. Want a barrel with a barrel band? Jack has done it!
