45 huntsman from late 70s -- advice on powder loads
« on: November 13, 2006, 05:21:01 AM »
Greetings all!

My brother has let me borrow a huntsman that he purchased NIB back in the early 80s on sell off.  I am breaking into muzzleloading for the second split of deer season this year.

Does anybody have some load data for this gun?  I am shooing roundball out of it, but would like to know if any of you have a favorite recipe.  I had considered trying sabots or powerbelts, but reading the posts on this list have talked me out of it.  Roundballs it is... 0.440

I am using powdered Triple 7 and #11 percussion caps.   But I need the advice on the amounts of powder.

Thanks.

William

Question about early Huntsman

Is this the model Huntsman that has a push-in breech plug? Wasn't it that type that injured shooters who then sued H&R into bankrupcy? I would not fire a push-in type firearm. There are better ways to spend my life and better frontloaders to fire.
best,            nrb

Thanks men.... for both the powder info and the words of caution.  I did indeed read about the push in breech plug issue.   I think I will start with a lower load and work up.  The nipple is clean at the moment and I'll endeavor to keep it that way.

Other readers are still welcome and encouraged to post thoughts and advice.

Thanks,
William
