Cheap Knife

I like the looks of this knife and it's made in the USA.  I want the black handled version.  Reckon they are any good?

Haven't the vaguest idea, since I've never seen on up close, let alone try one out, but the steel they use isn't the world's best by a long shot.  You'll be spending some time keeping it honed.  The one Remington I have, given to me as a gift,  is the "Camper" pocket knife, which also uses that steel.  It sits in my drawer.  I like something that'll hold an edge a bit longer, even in a pocket knife.  Too bad, it's well made otherwise.

the 420 is not the best of the stainless, also keep in mind almost all the major brands have knives made in china or pakistan or tiawan to compete for cheaper knives, then they still have the good knives thats made in the u.s. or germany etc. years ago remington made a top notch knife, have not seen one in awhile

swampman,if i remember correctly I saw them in the sportsman warehouse...did not pay them much mind.if you have one in yer area might be a place to compare price and see how it fits yer hand.

SWAMPMAN,

I looked at that knife also until I saw waht the blade was made of.  I'll go to the other guys one further and tell you to flat avoid anything made of 420 Stainless ...regardless of where its made.  I bought a couple of neat looking knives made from 420 and sharpening is frustrating to say the least  :'(

As far as where their made , there was big to do on an archery forum I'm a member of about not buying arrrows that are'nt made in the USA...(I'm all for buying made in the USA whenever possible ! ) Mainly not buying ones made in China.
Then someone posted telling them to take a look at where all their camo clothes and Rocky boots are made !
I used to live in Ohio, and my dad and 3 brothers would drive down to Nelsonville, Ohio to the Rocky factory to buy our hunting boots.  Rocky moved their production to China to be "competitve" in the market....Oh, they've also more than trippled their prices since the move to China !
The rocky boots today are nowhere near what the they used to be.

I collect and restore older knives...but if you want one to try out a cheap one that is quality made check out this one.
I got it to try as a hunting knife...It's not the quality of a handmade knife, but its 440c, well made and under $10.oo and it shaved the hair off my arm no problem !

Most Bucks are 420 stainless.  I didn't buy the knife.  They were all sold in one day.

There are 10 different types of 420 steel out there.  The one Buck uses is one of two 420's that has enough carbon in it to qualify as martensitic (heat treatable) steel.  The others are actually "work hardening" steels, which is why you never hear any of the companies who use those forms of 420 ever mention such things, as heattreat, temper, edgeholding etc.  The 420HC (not  actual/proper AISI nomenclature...it's a marketing term) that Buck is using is roughly comparable to their previous steel...425M.  425M was pretty crappy also when it came to edge holding, but hardly anyone uses it anymore, so I guess Buck switched to something more easily available.

if it's not carbon steel in a knife i don't use it carbon steel works better & to me makes a better nicer looking knife , tom

I had one of the folding versions of that Remington knife.  Biggest piece of crap knife I've had. Couldn't sharpen it, wouldn't hold an edge.  I dropped it one day and all of the screws holding the handle together broke!!  Everyone one of them!  It only fell about 3 feet to the concrete lot.  I just tossed it in the garbage, I was so disgusted.  It was only about 2 months old too.
