PC 657-3 41 Mag w/6" barrel
« on: November 08, 2006, 02:56:38 AM »
Just picked up a 657-3 PC 41 Mag Hunter with 6" ported barrel.  Scoping with a 2x Leupold.

If I am getting only 1200 fps [a guess...have not shot yet] from a 210 XTP will it perform at 100 yards on a deer if I have a great rest for such a shot?  I keep hearing that the XTPs need more velocity to expand and wonder if I should try the 170 GR JHC from Sierra in the shorter barrel so I will get some expansion out there?

Any other comments on 41 loads and bullets for this gun I would love to hear.  Posted similar question on Handgun Hunting section.

Thanks.

Be honest with yourself.  Can you guarantee you would hit a paper plate at 250 yards...100 yards...50 yards?  Then you have no business replacing the plate with a live animal.

Aren't you suppose to have 1200 fps at 100 yds to get a deer? I could be wrong but thats what I think.

Go with the 250 gr Federal, or 250 and 265 Corbon or Buffalo Bore and you won't have to worry about expansion or penetration at 100 yds.

I don't know how the 240 Winchester performs but it might be a good one to try for the longer shots too.

I'd be concerned the 170 would loose too much velocity at that range - but there are much more expert hand gun hunters on GB who can speak with much more experience.

I'm more concerned about shot placement and  penetration than expansion with the larger bore handgun hunting rounds.

Check out the GB hand gun hunting forum more discussions on this kind of thing.

they had just a tad more "oomph" than the federal 210g JHPs which had a tad more than the 175g silvertips
very manageable and fun to shoot
and they are the most accurate round I have tried and there have been several posts saying the same thing
