Ruger Security Six
« on: November 07, 2006, 10:40:48 AM »
I am considering a 4" Ruger Security Six, and I have found one locally for a pretty good price.  How strong are the frames on these revolvers, and do they compare with the GP-100 and Smith 686 frames in terms of strength?  I would like to use it as a woods carry gun with 158-180gr hardcast lead bullets, but I don't want to put to much stress on the frame if it cannot handle it.

It will handle any published load you want to put through it. Excellent pistols. Built like a brick. I still have a speed six, (same frame) that I bought in the early eighties. Still as good as the day i got it.  KN

Its NOT a GP100 or a L-frame S&W but it is a solid gun. ;)

I've got a Ruger Security Six as well as a Speed Six, I won the Security Six at a PPC competition, I was so impressed with it that when I was looking for a short barrel 357 with fixed sights I went to the Speed Six, they are quite accurate, and extremely sturdy.  I believe the GP100 is essentially a refined Security Six, but that doesn't make the Security Six a dog by any means!

I've a 6" Security Six. The GP-100 is just a more refined model and the SS is every bit as strong as the L-frames. I've had mine for 14 years now and shoot top end 357 magnum loads through it.  I mostly push a 358156 GC cast (160 gr with WWs) at 1400+ fps and the 125 XTP/FP at 1690 fps (both are published manual loads). I've shot quite a few of these plus factory and other magnum loads and there is no sign of problems.

The Security Six is a good gun.  I have one and it's exactly what you describe.  A woods and field gun.  I've shot an awful lot of magnum loads through it and the gun is a hand me down to begin with, but it's still a shooter.  If the price is right, buy it.

Here is a Speed Six that is a fun little .357.  I generally prefer S&W's, but this one is still here after all these years.

Nothing wrong with the lil Ruger. They are quite durable. I shot one in the service that must have had a ton of  wad cutters ran through it. Still shot expert with it after I picked it up from the bottom a 50 cal ammo can. Bet the ten or so stacked on top it all could have done it as well.

This same subject came up on another forum a while back. I own both a GP-100 and an older Security Six, so I measured the cylinder walls and found that they are essentially the same. The only advantage I see in the GP-100 is the additional cylinder lock at the front of the crane.

I had heard that Bill Ruger said they never made a dime on the Security-Six because it was too expensive to manufacture. I think the GP-100 was a way to make a cheaper revolver while making it larger for light-bullet, magnum loads.

I've had at least five and they were all excellent. I think the newer ones with the scalloped recoil shield on the right side are maybe finished out a little nicer in the blued version. I'd get a stainless if I could. Ruger has always had nice stainless.

I picked-up a .357 Security-Six today.  Blue 4" with adjustable sights.  It says "Made in the 200th year of American Liberty" on the left side.  Has Pachmayr finger grip stocks.  90%+ condition, $225+tax! I already got new looking walnut target stocks on eBay for $7.04 shipped!  Now to make some loads, we'll start with my favorite - 148gr DEWC over 3 grains of Bullseye.
I aim to please - but often miss.
