WAL-MART RIFLES/AMMO SAME AS ANYOTHER??
« on: November 07, 2006, 06:23:54 AM »
Are the rifles and ammo sold at your local wallyworld the same quality as sold buy your local gun store?  I have a local gun dealer in town who swears that all walmart firearms and ammo are not even made in the same factory as his firearms,  (his winchester ammo  vs wallyworlds winchester ammo)  sorry for such a silly question but everyone here seems very knowledgeable and dont seem to have a wal-mart phobia.  thanks Hal

if a box of ammo has the word "Winchester" written all over it.... its made by winchester, I don't care who sells it or what factory it was made in.  He is just saying that to you so you can buy from him and not wallyworld because walmart has some really cheap ammo at times.

Yep, its alla big heap.  when gunmakers and ammomakers are selling their wears, they make a certain model, and each of that same model are going to be exactly the same.  If you buy a Marlin 336C 30-30 from walmart or your gun dealer, the next day its still going to be a Marlin 336C 30-30, no store attached.  It is true that walmart does have the price advantage which most smaller competators think of as unfair, so that is why they start slinging mud.

If you think about it, if that were true, the gun manufacturer would be at fault, for making a lower quality product, wally world just sells it.

Its all about economies of sales, higher volume, lower prices, just how it is.

Some of the best factory ammo you can buy (I hate factory ammo) is the "white box" Winchester .223 and 22-250 40 count sold at all the local Walmarts.

In addition to trying to up their portion of the market, I think the small shop guys are looking at what Wally routinely stocks.  Which is the low end or entry level rifles.  The ADL's rather than the BDL,s, the 710's "and a free scope" package deals.  They stock what sells.  What the small shop guys don't tell you is that Wally can order you just about anything.

I was in a similar conversation on the net, years ago, with the owner of Muzzy broadheads, as to whether the Walmart Muzzys were inferior quality to those in a pro shop. He stated that they are the same broadheads, regardless of where they are sold. He also brought up a good point. With the volume that Walmart sells, it would be suicide to offer a product through them that wasn't up to standards, as word would get around real quick that your product wasn't any good.
I'll bet that the same goes with firearms and ammo.

I've been to several private gun stores who gave me the same line; there is absolutely no difference in ammo or guns. I buy Win 9 MM target rounds at Wally for $12.68 per 100. The local gun stores want almost $10 for a 50 pack or $20 per 100. The ammo is exactly the same.
About 2 years ago I went to the Beretta company owned store in NYC to but a Silver Pigeon o/a. After bargaining for an hour he wouldn't go below $2300. I told him the local Gander Mountain was selling the same gun for $1995. He told me they can't beat the Gander prices but they offer better "service". I bought it at Gander.

Go to Wal-Mart's web site.  You'll find rifles under sporting goods.  You can look over dozens of makes and models.  Just print out the page of a rifle you like and take it to the store.  They can order it for you.  I bought my first gun at Wal-Mart this way last March.  Got a lefty, laminated, stainless Ruger M77 MkII in .25-06.  Price was as good as I saw it going for at GunBroker.com but I didn't have to pay shipping or transfer fees.  It's been an accurate rifle and I'm darned happy with it.  Can't imagine how it might be inferior to Rugers sold through smaller outlets.

Another way to look at this is Wally wants to pay the maker, the least amount of money it can. The maker can't make any changes in his production line to sell its product for the absolute bottom price.  ;)

You better know what you want before you go into Wallyworld because all of the ones I've been in had people working there that absolutlely didn't know crap about the hunting products they sold, especially guns and calibers and optics.  Pathetic customer service.

Pathetic customer service?  What was the local gun store providing except outright lies?  I’d rather have a Wal-Mart employee that couldn’t answer questions.

As an attorney, I can tell you that if you bought a rifle from that particular dealer, then you would likely have a cause of action against him for fraud.

The small shops can't buy like Walmart and the pay more so they can't compete price wise all they have is service and knoligable sales people to give you better service.if yor shop has nothing but liers for sales people ,than you will pay more and be serviced like the bull services the cow .I would shop elsewhere. what he should have said is we offer the best selection and service and we carry only first quality firearms and ammo and stand behind it 100%. our sales people are trained and know firearms . No one can sell as cheap as Walmart ,but Walmart can't give you the service and expertice we can .

Finding an english speaking, literate person at Walmart is more difficult than finding the firearm of choice at their stores. Day in and Day out Walmart has the best prices for their 'middle of the road inventory rifles'....but for a couple extra bucks I can usually find what I want from a better store. Cheap is as cheap does.............

Although there's not much on Walmart's web site any more which makes it appear that they're doing away with the firearms special order program, they are still very much in the firearms business. I checked with all three stores here recently, they're still selling em.

One of the stores used to have very ignorant clerks working the gun counter, but this time there was a very knowledgeable young lady working there that had all the right answers.  I looked thru their catalogs and they had every mfr that I know of and a few I'd forgotten about, they still order from Sports South just as they always have, who btw, is one of the distributors that your local gun shop gets firearms from.

Walmart has done or is doing away with their layaway program for everything except firearms and a few other things, but they still have the 50% down policy as before.

Although I've only bought one firearm thru them, everything went as planned, no surprises or problems and I had my .22-250 Ultra 7 days from the order date, exactly what I was told when I ordered it.
