Went to the Range with my new Toys
« on: November 07, 2006, 05:34:47 AM »
;D I post about a rifle batttery I was building and finally took my real selection to the range on Saturday. The first one out of the case was my 6.5x55 Custom with a Weaver V7. 4 shots to site in and it just got better. 4 3 shot groups at 100yds. 1st 1 in, 2ns 3/4in and 3 &4 3/8in center to center, all with blue box Federal 140gr. This rifle drives tacks. 2nd out of the case my 30-06 Ruger 77MKII. Once sighted in groups ran from 11/2" to the final and smallest at 1" or so 2" highj dead center this rifle has a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40. Number 3 was my Ruger 77 MKII in 22-250 with a Pentax Gameseeker 3-9x40. It shot nothing over an 11/4" allday with the best at 1/2" 3 shot group. Finally as if I needed it was my rtemington 70ADl in 7mag topped with a Mueller 3-10X44 Red Dot and boy can this thing shoot. 150gr Fed Fusion all inside an 1" and two 3 shot groups at 200 at 2-21/2" which is as good as my ole eyes will allow. I will be dropping the 7mag in an Elk ridge laminated stock in a month or two (Ordered it today) just don't like tupperware period. The 7Mag will have a muzzle break too, not for recoil but muzzle jump. Overall it was a great Saturday at the range with 100+ roundsw and a right shoulder of hamburger.

I am happy your getting the results you hoped for.  If you want to reduce the muzzle jump... why not just get it magna ported ? its designed for dropping the muzzle jumps.

Question, how come you have a 30-06 and a 7mm mag ? to me both rounds are almost idential.

The 7mag is a little flatter and I'll use it for the longer range shots plus it's closer to the 300Win than the 06.  Jess

I'm particularly interested in your 6.5x55.  Those are some pretty sweet groups, and I'm sure you find the recoil (or rather lack thereof) to be quite pleasant.

This 98 is the single most accurate rifle I have ever shot. The recoil or lack of it is another reason plus the trigger breaks at 3# no creep, like glass. I almost fell off the bench when we measured those 4 groups. I only paid $ 316.00 for it and those groups were shot with an old 2.5-7 Weaver. I just put a new Mueller 3-9x40 on top and will report next week. U are right this even impressed me. Jess

Let's see, you're getting 3/8" groups with the Swede and you're gonna change the set up???  You really like to tempt fate don't you.  ;D

The rifle started life as an as new Mauser 98 military. I was told it has a Douglas Barrel (241/2"). Timney Trigger set at 3 lbs. Custom Walnut stock. It now has a Mueller 3-9X40 in Leupold bases and rings. The action is bedded and the barrel is free floating. It is just a very well crafted rifle and it shoots as good as it looks. it weighs with scope/bases/rings and sling 9.2 pounds.  Jess :o :o :o :o
