A Gun Show Bargain
« on: November 07, 2006, 02:28:05 AM »
 Hello All
I was at a recent gun show speaking with one of my Dealer friend's and he wanted my opinion on a Damaged model 27-2. Apparently someone had left this Beauty in a leather holster and the chemicals of the leather corroded the Bluing of the cylinder. I advised him to make the revolver Look right he would have to have the cylinder reblued. He told me that would tie this revolver up for a long time, and would rather sell it of and move on. After a brief Haggling match I walked off with it for $250.00 out the door. I noticed it had a 5" barrel and I had never had this barrel length before, but it sure looked right to me and seemed to be the Perfect balance. Upon getting it home a good clean up proved the cylinder was it's only issue so it is off to my refinisher for a new re blue. I had some time so tossed together a few hand loads for it before sending off the cylinder to see if it grouped well, Mu suspicions were right this vintage model 27 was a tack driver. Regards, Hammerdown

Hammerdown - for $250 man, you sure scored well.  I really enjoy those older S&Ws and the Model - 2s are the best of the lot, in my book.  Funny thing about the 5 inch barrels - to some they look just a bit too long but they really feel very good in the hand, point and balance well.

Nice revolver.  Nice target.  Good deal.  Mikey.

Hello Mikey
Thanks for the kind words. The average price for 27s in my neck of the woods for the last year or so, has been $500.00 on up. I like this model, but waited till I found a deal on one to own itr. I was actually looking for a 4" Barrel to mate with my 57 which is in Nickel but did not see one afforadable, as Most-N-frames have sky rocketed in the past couple of years, and I feel any of them that are old enough to be pinned and recesed command the large amount from Perspective Buyers. I recently purchased a model 29-3. I have wanted a 4" barrel in this  model as welll, But price was real high on those, at an average of 575.00 on up. I did pick up a nice 29-3 with a 6" barrel in blue that look as though it may have not been shot for $350.00 considering what I had in the reviolver I swapped towards it. That to me was a good deal, and it is a 6" barrel. So I now have 4"-5"-6" barrels in the Three different calibers. Regards, Hammerdown

I have 2 of those 5" 357s and like them very much. It was Skeeter Skelton's favorite barrel length. One is a 5 screw gun in about 90% condition, the other I just bought at Gander Mt. a 4 screw and in beautiful shape. How much did you pay for the refinishing. My son has a Blackhawk that was left in a holster and needs to be reblued. Shotgunner

Hello Shotgunner
I havent been billed for it yet. If you want the very best job just doing part refinishing to match the rest of the revolver, I strongly reccomend Ford's in Florida. Follow the Link beow and they can quote a price and time duration for your revolver cylinder. Regards, Hammer Down.

I would have paid considerably more for it in the condition that you described.  I would say that you did exceptionally well. ;D

Hello Doorgunner
I was told by my refinisher, that the cylinder is on it's way back to me as of Friday. This will make it look like brand new again, and I will Post a picture of it completed when I have it all together. Regards, Hammerdown

I wish I could find one (or a Model 28) to convert to .44 Special.  Nice gun!

Model 28s are getting so expensive that I don't know if a conversion is wise? They now have collector status and it would be cheaper to just buy a shooter grade .44 special than to convert a model 28.

Great deal on a gorgeous revolver!  After the refinishing it is even prettier.  Did you let your friend check it out after the makeover?

S&W's that are blued are hard to come by, but I've been told that if you see one you should snap it up since they are no longer made.  Congratulations on an awesome deal! 8)

Hello Ramos1212
I sure wouldn't let him know how well it shot either. ;D This group was with handloads and the first time I fired it, before having the cylinder refinished. Hammerdown
