is this a good handi scope?
« on: November 05, 2006, 08:18:58 AM »
WOW is all I can say. Searching for a scope for my soon to be new handi 22-250 I find these.
http://www.riflescopes.com/products/89717/new_pentax_4-16x50_gameseeker_rifle_scope.htm
they are nitrogen filled and feature the ballitic comp. reticle. Where have these scope been hiding? Anyone have any experience with these? they come with a liftime warranty and rumor is that burris actually builds them with pentax glass? this could be one of the best values on the market if they are reliable.

As I was once told, you get what you pay for when it comes to scopes.   I personally have no experience with Pentax - so I couldn't give a thumbs up/down.

Although, I have a "cheapy" Bushnell Banner that works great on my 223 Ultra..  $120 +/-

Don't know about their scopes, but I got a pair of binoculars and a camera from pentax that are great. That is not a bad price,if you get one be sure to let us know how it works out.

I do not see a paralax adjustment. No scope over 10 power should be without one. If it doesn't, you will have better results on targets
& hunting as well if you get a scope in the same price range that tops out at 9 or 10X. Look's like a place where they cut costs & that is unacceptable!

the 'cheapy Bushnell Banner' is what Weatherby is putting on their Vanguards that come from the factory with scopes on 'em.   that's a Very Strong endorsement for a scope.......since some of those Vanguards are made in Weatherby .300 Magnum caliber, etc.

i like the 'Banners' that i've put on my rifles.

Bushnell Banner.
I had a 4-12 for sale in the GB add section including Weaver rings. Never even got an offer. I have since put it on another rifle.

Is that is an indication how good they are? There is nothing wrong with my scope only I did not need it anymore. Sure strange?

Don't know anything about the Pentax scope, but for $109, you can get a Mueller APV which I know is a great scope and has an excellent reputation.

Speaking of the  Banner, I have to say the Banner 1.5-4-5x32 is a fine little scope, clear and bright with 4" of eye relief. It's on my .45-70 Handi shooting some stout loads and is working fine after about 60 rounds of 350gr and 400gr loads at 1900-2000fps, and 300gr NPs at 2330fps. Talk about bang for the buck, at less than $70, it's a great buy!

Fred, your scope not selling probably had more to do with you being in Canada than the scope itself.

probably a fine scope, I like this one:  http://www.midwayusa.com/esearch.exe/search?TabID=0&category_selector=all_products&search_keywords=whitetail+classic

I don't think there is a better deal for the $$$$  I have one on many calibers including 270, 35 whelen, 223, 45-70 and all have been excellent.  Give it a whirl, you won't be disapointed.  my .02

this rifle will be almost always used for coyotes. I already have a ruger varmint rifle in 22-250 for target and small varmints, Its just to heavy for coyotes.

dodgefreak...i would consider a lower power scope for called coyote's...i hunt the high sage of s.w. idaho & have found no need for high powered glass...maybe you are in the plain's...hunting in 4" of cheat grass ?? i could only guess ?? i for example "just" rigged up my "handi" 22-250 with a leupold muzzleloader-shotgun scope in 2x7 power...i know...i know...why limit a long range rifle with short range optic's ?? because i like the short throw of the "handi" & i like to put the "whomp" on coyote's...& i believe the two "fiddy" will work great...i have missed many coyote's because i was geared for a long range shot...only to have them pop up close !! just consider your option's...good luck...

thanks but you guessed it. I am on the eastern plains in low sage country and I do need longer range optics from time to time. 200 yrds is a common distance due to the fact that the areas I hunt have edjucated yotes on them. I also love the ballistic plex reticle option for fast reference points out passed 300 yrds. I might just bight the bullet and go with the fullfield II.

dodgefreak...the burris fullfield 11 may be the way to go ?? one thing i have learned in recent year's is decent glass help's alot...i think stepping up a few buck's for optic's that suit one's need's regardless of power need or preference is the way to go !! in other word's i would pay for example $200-$300 for good 3x9 glass than "iffy" glass in higher power..for the same money ?? just my thought's...good luck !!

Do yourself a favor and look at the Mueller TacII, it's great glass, equal to between VXII and VXIII, mildot reticle and made in Japan. I have 2 of em, great scopes, extremely good glass for $300.

Well since we're all offering our opinions and such, I would suggest looking for a used Simmons Aetec 3.8-12x44. Usually on Ebay for under $200 and on the different forums for less at times. Fine shootin' glass and equal to more expensive scopes. Aspherical lens technology can't be beat in my books.

The guys over at rimfirecentral forum really like the Mueller and Swift scopes.  I don’t know how they  are with the adder recoil of a center fire round.  But I trust the rimfire guys opinions about optical quality.  If you think about it the rimfire guys usually spend a lot of time looking through the scopes, kind of like bench rest shooters do.  Most average hunters spend more time carrying the rifle around than shooting it.  But a hunter also might need better low light performance and durability then target shooting does.  Anyway, I hear good things optically about the Mueller and Swift scopes considering the price.
