Author Topic: Mossberg ATR Wood Stock (pics) (Read 5206 times)

The ATR .308 wood stock version arrived. Having not shot it yet, I am happy with it's appreance. The finish isn't bad. The action and barrel fit nicely into the stock. The metal finish is still matte and looks a little awkward with the walnut stained stock. The checkering was a surprise, its actually cut and not pressed. The trigger guard is plastic. If it shoots as well as the .30-06, I'll be more than happy. The cost was $295 + tax. In comparison the same shop sells the Stevens for $285

Thats a pretty nice looking rifle. What is the trriger like, can you adjust it? I've heard thoes Mossbergs shoot very well. Have you shot the plastic one yet? How does it do?

Yeah, I know the feeling. Around here (SE Wisconsin) the 2 or 3 weeks before deer gun hunting the range is waay too busy for my taste. Is the wood stocked version much more expensive than the synthetic stock one?

I e-mailed Mosserg awhile back and promised them that I would run to the store and buy an ATR if they made one in 223. A person did answer and say that he/she would pass that on. Maybe if a bunch more folks would do this it would get them going in that direction (wink wink)

Don Fischer: The trigger was acceptable out of the box for me. Just a little creep, but it broke nicely. It doesn't appear to be adjustable and I've not seen anything in the instructions to indicate so. The synthetic model shoots very well. I've had it for two years now and 1" groups at 100 yds with Rem Core Locts and Win Power Points 180's are normal. I originally had a Tasco Golden Antler 3X9 on it but recently changed to a Bushnell Legend. I've not had the chance to zero it with the Legend, however. This was my first .30-06 with a synthetic stock, so I was a little curious what the recoil would be like. It turned out not to be bad at all. Recoils less than my 700 BDL and about the same as the Savage 110, which has a wood stock.

smokey262: I've emailed and called Mossberg once each to convey my satisfaction with the ATR and to request additional calibers, specifically the .223 and 7mm-08. The e-mail reply was short and polite. It pretty much said, "thanks for taking the time ... we'll pass your comments on". The phone call amounted to the same response. I've not called then regarding the wood version, but I'll do so as well. The Synthetic model was a gift from my wife, but I know she bought it from Wal Mart. The price was $244 + tax. The .308 was purchased for a local dealer for $295 + tax.

The ATR's have come a long way sense they were first released. I remember the very first runs were pretty rough around the edges, but now they are looking a whole lot cleaner. Good looking rifle, I am sure it will give you many years of good service.

Hey, does your wife have any sisters?

This summer at the Ducks Unlimited Great Outdoors Festival in Oshkosh Wisconsin I spoke with some guys who were working in the Mossberg booth. I told them that the ATR was very nice, but I was curious why you could only buy them at Wally. They said because no one wants to compete with Wally pricing. Sounds reasonable to me

Anyway, that sucker is very nice looking. To me my guns are toys and tools, and I give a rats butt what other guys think about them.

Buy the way, Natchez has the 3-9x40 Legend on sale for $109 and you get a free 20x50 spotting scope. Even if the spotting scope is only good enough to give to the kids the Legend at $109 is a good buy

HehHehHeh, thanks for the compliment. The Mrs. does have a sister. She's married and not the firearms type, sorry. I lucked out. But there is a catch ... My wife like purses as much as I like guns and she pays as much, and sometimes more, for them.

That's interesting what the Mossberg Rep said. I have recently seen the ATR at a couple Gander Mountain stores, though.

I was curious about the ATR, and my shooting buddy bought one in .270 and put a $50 Bushnell 4-12X40 scope on it. We took it to the range and got it zeroed, and then took turns shooting it about every few rounds or so, just having fun. At 50yds, 40 rounds of ammunition between the two of us and every bullet was inside the 10-ring; most were inside 1/2". Granted it was only 50yds, but this little rifle can shoot!

. If the .308 shoots well, I think I'll look to pick up a .270 with the Marine-cote finish and black synthetic stock.

I have had a ATR100 for almost a year,it is a great gun for the money.Mine is the black synthetic stock in 270.I have not shot it much but to sight it in,will hold around a 1'' group at 100 yds with a cheap tasco 4x scope.

Wow! One more added to the ATR stable.

GCW: Very glad your enjoying the .270. Great shooting. Not bad for a rifle that cost less than $250. The first scope I installed on my synthetic .30-06 ATR was a Tasco Golden Antler 3X9X40. Unfortunately, this summer it lost its ability to hold a zero. I replaced it with a Bushnell Legend 3X9X50. It had about 200-250 round's fired through it, before the Tasco gave out. Hopefully you will have better luck with yours.

my go-to, all around rifle is an old 800A in .308; love that rifle. promised the wife an ATR if they bring it out in something lighter shooting than .308 but bigger slug than .243. can't beat the mossies imho; best value on the market for working guns

No story to tell yet - but there will be. My wife just bought me a Mossberg 100 ATR in .270 today. She did say something about having a merry Christmas, I think, as I was too busy looking at the new addition.

Heh Heh Heh. Sombody's having a Merry Christmas. It's amazing the glassy eye glaze the we gun guys get when a new rifle comes into our possession ... especially when we didn't have to pay for it (well sort of). Your wife was probably thinking about when you used to look at her that way

Animal: My apologies for the inappropriate use of grammer. The Legend did not give out, it was the Tasco. I re-read my post and just now realized that what I had written could be interpreted that the Legend failed. The correction has been made. Doh!

Since my last post, I have had the opportunity to zero the rifle and fire about a box of shells with the Legend on it. The scope is very clear and the adjustments are true. I also have a Nikon Pro Staff. It's on a .280 NEF Handi Rifle. It also is a very nice scope. The Nikon has seen more rounds than the Legend. I like both the same. At this point, I would buy another of each without hesitation.

The Legend I purchased has the 50mm objective lens. I used high Leupold Rifleman rings. There is about an 1/8" clearance between the Obj. lens and the barrel.

Good luck with the new .308. Keep us posted.

I 'll more than likely put a 1.5 x 4.5 or the 2x 7 with the 32 mm objective with low rings as long as the bolt clears the scope. I think the bolt throw is pretty standard as in a savage. When I start shooting with the rig I'll use up some factory silver tips then reload as I only have the hand Lee Loader for the .308 and ya need to use cases fired from the rifle that one is loading for. Thanks jro45.

The synthetic model shoots real good. It is capable of 1" groups at 100 yds (as long as I do my part). It shoots Federal Power Shoks best, but does very well with Rem Core Locts and Winchester Power Points (180 gr rounds). The reason I bought the newer .308 was due to how well I liked the '06.

I still have not shot the .308. That will have to wait 'till Spring.

Cottenpicker: I think $225 is a good deal. Wal Mart usually has the best price on the ATR's at $244.

Looked at a 30-06 in black synthetic today at Academy. Was surprised that the synthetic looked that well finished. I do not care for synthetics at all. All my rifles are wood. Surprised. Thinking of picking
up an ATR in 308 in wood or maybe synthetic. Leaning 308 because of accuracy potential. I own a Remington Model 7 ss laminated in 7mm08 and was considering rebarreling to 308 or maybe trading and buying the ATR in 308. Would like something that groups a bit better even though the model 7 will group around 1 1/2" all day. $:-\$

I ended up putting a Sightron SI 2.5-10x44 on my ATR. Still have not shot it yet but, March usually is when I start shooting again. I did order some Lee Collet dies from F&M Reloading Equipment, $29 shipped. And also bought a box of Hornedy 150gr SST's from the local shop. A good dose of Reloader 22 should get me about 2900fps.

DLEB: I agree with your comments about the sythetic stock. Have you seen the simulated wood sythetic version? I don't believe it flatters the rifle.

RicMic Have you used a Sightron scope in the past? Just curious about their quality. I like the magnification range and the 44mm lens. Some of the Simmons 44 Mag's used similar settings. Be sure to keep us posted on the range results.

Yes, I have used Sightron scopes before - love 'em. I really like Mueller scopes too but, Leupold is still tops.
