Finally, someone is making a Mauser type left handed "short action" for the 7X57.  Now I must choose between Chrome Moly or Stainless.  Do any of you guy's have educated opinions on this choice I must make?

razmuz,
Maybe there is someone with a bit more metalurgical background than I to answer your question. I prefer stainless for my revolvers due mostly to the abrasion resistance but for my rifles I prefer the dull blue finish that I get with chrome-moly steel.

Most (if not virtually all) of the competition benchrest shooters use stainless barrels.  In addition to additional corrosion resistance, I understand that stainless barrels last longer too.

For what it's worth, ALL of my rifles (and pistols for that matter) are stainless.

I suspect you are speaking of the Montana 1999 actions. I have a preference for chromoly just because I think a hunting rifle should be blue! I am beginning to think though that the stainless actions are less suseptible to warpage in heat treating. Since neither of the actions are likely to be seriously warped that's really a moot point though. The chromoly action may be a little "slicker" in operation but since they are not all that hard this may be a minor point as well. I guess in the end the question is "Do you like grey or blue?"GD
