Remington 722 .257 Roberts AI

I have a chance to pick up a Remington 722 (or is it a 721?) at the local shop, and it is in very good shape.  It was originally chambered iin .257 Roberts, but was reamed to a .257 AI (and is so stamped on the barrel).  The story behind the gun is its on consignment from a local elderly gentleman who is unable to shoot any more.  According to him, the rifle was reamed by P.O. Ackley himself, but I have no way of verifying this.  Regardless, what would the approximate value be on the rifle?  Assumin ght econversion was done correctly,  any reason to stay away from this gun?  Thanks!

Well they did make the .257 on the short action. That's the model 722. I reckon the rifle would be worth about $200, if it was unchanged. If Ackley did rechamber it you can bet it is done right. You can fire factory ammo in it, and except for a little loss of velocity it will preform just like any .257 Roberts. You will have .257 AI brass when you extract.
It was P. O.'s favorite wildcat, having just about the optimum powder capacity for the bore size. Judicious loading will have you steppin' on the heels of any .25-06.
If the old guy can present documents proving Ackley did the job, I throw in another $100.
