I used Brownells Gunkote on my 1911 frame.  It looked good when I got done, not so much now.  The frame is aluminum and from climbin up and down in my climber tree stand bangin it on the steel some of the paint has worn off, didnt chip off.  It may sound like I abuse the gun but this is normal use for me.

It does hold up well if you dont use your firearm the way I do and be a little more carefull with it, GunKote does hold up well.  I also did my Mossberg 500 frame and tube which has held up pretty great thus far.  Only have about 100 round through it though and not much walking through the woods.

It is super easy to do if you know how to use a sand blaster, a can of spray paint, and an oven.  I can post pics later if your interested, I dont feel like it tonight.

I'd love to see pics if and when you have time. Also, did you have to remove the bluing first? or just oilly residues???

Thx, Ryan

A good friend of mine that does a lot of work on his guns is starting to use the Brownells product.  He has finished a few of his AK47 builds in it and they look very nice. He bead blasts them first but I don’t think you really have to remove the old bluing or park. finish.   I think one thing that is very important is to completely degrease the parts.  If you don’t, when you heat it in the oven the grease or oil will seep out from the joints and lift up the paint.  Overall his stuff looks very nice.  He hasn’t really tested the durability to well but it should be very good for corrosion resistance.  I think it will where a little in high friction areas.  But then you can just redo it in a few years.  Try looking on some other boards like Glocktalk or AR15.com.  It is popular on a lot of the tactical guns and carry pistols.  I think a Handi barrel and stripped frame would be really easy to do.  I have been thinking about using my friends bead blaster and paint stuff to do my rifle and seeing how it well it works.

Have not used GunKote...but have used Duracoat.

Key to any of the paint systems...degrease, degrease again, handle with rubber gloves that do not leave a residue, and glass bead with FIND beads.

My ugly metal on my K31 turned out very well.

Of note, several of the coating systems can be baked on.  This might solve the wear issue.  But, don't use momma's oven, leaves a nasty smell/taste in the food....seriously.
