Can anyone recommed a scope for a 30-06 Ultra?
« on: October 26, 2006, 02:31:42 PM »
What power scope would you recomend and what brand? I have not looked into the meanings of "scope power"yet to understand it fully.

I have a Nikon Prostaf on my 30-30 Marlin, but would like to buy another scope for a 30-06 Ultra. I think Walmart carries alot of Leupolds.

Any recomendations on scope rings?

First off the BEST rings are Burris Signature Zee rings for the Weaver style rail. The BEST!!! Regarding the scope selection I would want to know a little bit more about the shooting it will be used for. On my .308 I put a 1-1/2-5X Leupold and it's great up to 100 yards but expensive($630.00 CDN). The Bushnell Elites are allot less money and seem to be pretty good. I have a 3200 4-12X with AO. So budget is a big factor.

ridge runner...i imagine the 30/06 would be used for deer-elk ?? i think a leupold 2x7 would be great for that application...i hunt coyote's with that scope & am considering a "slightly" lower power...i like field of view..that being said i think the 3x9 power scope may be the best all around scope out there...the power mean's how much better you can see.than the naked eye...so @ 3 power you will see your intended taget@ 3-time's better than the naked eye....the important thing in "my opinion" is don't overpower your scope meaning a 6x18 isn't needed for example to shoot deer in "most" situation's...a quality scope is very important...good luck !!

Bushnell 3200 or 4200 cannot be beat.  I'd get a 3X9 for a .30-06.

My hunting buddy swears by fixed power scopes. No chance of change in POI with power setting. Simpler more reliable. So don't over look the 6X fixed power option for shots to 120-150 yards.

I once read an article titled 'A Good Cheap Scope'. I went out and bought a Bushnell 'Sportview'($89.00 CDN). After trying to hit various targest with two rifles I finally gave up on it. There is no such thing as "A good Cheap Scope". A good scope like the 3200/4200 made in Japan (not Korea) will give years of reliable service but a Leupold will last as long as you or susequent owners use it-- it has a lifetime warrantee. Something else to think about.

I purchased a NIkon 3-9x40 at Wally World for 150.00  It was the best 150 bucks i ever spent. I went through at least 4 or 5 scopes on my 308 and 30-30. I was becoming very frustrated with loss of POI, fogging lenses, poor clarity, and just lame performance out of the 50 60 dollar scopes i was buying. I spent at least 150 bucks on all of those scopes alone. Not to mention all of the wasted ammo, and the gut wrenching miss on a nice buck. I shot the rifle the next day and the rifle was almost 12 inches off of the zero I worked so hard for. Trashed that scope and the one on my 30-30 because of its poor clarity and fogging and bought two Nikons. I haven't had ANY problems since then. I will never and I mean never buy a cheap scope again. But that's just my two cents. Do what you want its your money and your time.

A nice 2x7x33 Leupold VX-1 or 3x9x40 VX-1 would be ideal...Non-critical eye relief..superb optics...and the best gaurantee you can get...Not to mention they are in the Golden Ring series...

Everyone has their preferance thats for sure. Personally I am a big Weaver fan. From the Classic V's dependability to the Grand Slams awesome glass.
If you have the money to spend on a Leuy, I would take a hard look at the Ziess Conquest models...just beautiful scopes.
Look at the models for yourself. See what fits your needs the best.

The only scopes I will buy are Leupold's. My all time favorite is the VXII 2x7x32. The VXI would be a good and cheaper cost option.

I mount them to a H&R ULTRA base, using LEUPOLD QRW med height rings and a H&R hammer spur. You end up with a top quality scope, mounted low on the barrel with optimal hammer to scope clearance.

Here is a pic of the rings:

Here is a pic of the fit. The top PIC is a gloss 2x7 VXII on my Ultra 243 and the bottom PIC is a Matt 2x7 VXII on my 500 S&W:
