FA scope mounts
« on: October 25, 2006, 10:46:41 AM »
I hate to do it, but I have come to the realization that my eyes suck!  Some days I can shoot great and others I am all over the place.  It looks like I may need to scope my 83.  Any ideas what is better the Lovell or TSOB base?  Thanks.

Having used both quite a bit, I would say: whichever one looks better to you.  They both seem to hold up just fine to recoil and provide plenty of eye relief (a problem with the Leupold mount, for me).  There is also another mount out there now - maybe a Weigand? - anyway, one that lets you use Weaver-style rings ... I have no experience with that.

I use the Lovells:

The TSOB three or four ring mount is artistically challenged.  I have one.  I like the lines of the Lovell better.

That said, I don't know if you need a scope.  The TSOB or a similar Weaver base will mount with the three screws to the top strap, and permit any red-dot scope you want.  Other threads have suggested staying away from Aimpoint red dot.  I am tempted to try the Zeiss Z-Point on a cut-down TSOB weaver mount.  It's pricey, but small.

One thing to consider is the mounting and the balance point of the scope.  The Lovell appears to move the eyepiece closer to the eye with respect to the grip.  The TSOB has many possible positions for the rings.

BTW I don't recommend mounting the scope as shown with the turret adjacent to the ring.  This is how the rig was set up when I purchased it.  After shooting it, I noted that the scope would not adjust properly and it did need a new erector assembly and rebuilding by Leupold.  I have moved the scope rearward just a scosh to center the turret between two rings.

Chipster - that's odd.  I've been told to mount the scope with the turret up against the front ring if possible ... and have done so for a while with no problems.  The reasoning is that the scope is less likely to move.

On my TSOB base, I mounted both front rings together rather than spaced apart, and milled off the extra shelf on the front of the base.  This improved the looks somewhat and function is still there.

I am no expert in scope mounting but since my scope was damaged by the use on the hand cannon and was mounted as you see it concerned me.  So, I changed arrangement.  I sure hope it don't move.

I like your idea on moving the rings close together and milling the excess off.  Did you have to refinish the mount?

Well I ordered a TSOB, it should be here in a couple days.  I allready have a Leupold 2x from when I had a Ruger SRH.  The scope did help for making accurate shots with the Ruger.  I just was hoping I could get away with a unscoped gun for a while.  It's not that they look all that bad with a scope, it just cuts down on the packability...

But since I have a 44sp model 97 I can use that as my walking gun....It shoots 300gr LBTs at 1150fps just fine...recoil is a bit brisk, but so it the 454  ;D

ive been useing the aimpoint comp XD model on my FA's  for 10 years with thousands of rounds fired with no problem ! i have ssk mounts on all my  FA . it gives you the most flexablity when mounting scopes,  but for a red dot only gun i might opt for the weigand , its shorter and less expensive than ssk . i had the ssk base shortned for my 6" so it would look better on that gun with a aimpoint comp,  but still long enough to still mount a 2 x leupold with 3 rings if i chose to do so!

Yea I don't know what is the deal with people saying Aim Points can't handle the recoil...They are by far the best made reddot available...I guess every now and then you can have a fluke bad one...Just like you can have an issue with an FA gun....the nice thing is both companies backup their products....

i have 5 aimpoints and have been useing some for 20 or so years and not one has failed me !  with a many thousands of rounds fired with each scope, i also have about 20 other  red dot sights IE tasco, redfield ,  i have tried , leupold,  millet, burris, tru glow,  bsa,  docter sight,  ultra dot .and the aimpoints are the best in my opinion with the redfield esd  in second place considering crispness of dot , field of view, clarity & brightness , and 100% paralex free not like some makes that make that clame but are not!
