My new Deer Gun, Whatcha think?
« on: October 21, 2006, 07:39:50 PM »
Her she is a brand new 2006 Weatherby Vanguard Deluxe Sporter in 30-06, with a Timney trigger and a vintage Redfield Illuminater 3-10x50 with flip up caps. I hunt the WV hills where shots are 30-120yds.

Good luck with your new rifle. I like the test target with the Weatherby rifles. I have the same make and Mdl in a 7 MM Rem Mag. w/ a Cabela s Premium 4-12X 40MM scope and leather military sling. I hunt deer in the Nebraska sand hills where the shots can be out to past 400 Yds .but most times I will not take a shot unless the deer is within 300 Yds.

What do I thinK? I think you have too much scope for the conditions you say you will be hunting. Otherwise it seems fine.

Don't pay too much attention to the test target on Weatherby rifles, it's really not shot from your rifle.  :o What's that you say? Nope it's not shot from your RIFLE. It's shot from a machine rest that clamps your barreled action down rock solid. But they never bother to fire it again after the stock is mated to it. They don't do the best job in the world on bedding actions either and thus the groups on that test target have little relationship to what you might get from it even with the same load listed.

Been down that road before and won't buy anymore Weatherby rifles.

Looks like a beautiful stock. I live in Putnam Co. and I'm heading to my friend's camp in Lewis Co. today for a little squirrel hunting. I hope the new rig works out well for you.

Good looking rifle.  I agree with GB on the scope.  I recently traded a .300 Winnie to a guy. I had packed that rifle over a lot of western terrain for close to 20 years.  It had a 1.5x5 Burris on it.  I never felt underscoped.  He's gonna put a 4x16x50 on it so he can "take advantage of the rifle's potential"..   ::)  We're in WV also.

That's very interesting on the test target issue.

Wonder if Sako and Tikka does the same thing, or if the groups are shot with the rifle fully assembled?

I stuck a Bushnell 4200 2.5 to 10 on my .30-06. Longest shot I have to make is probably 100 yards. Why the extra power? To be able to see down to the target at the range, for one. I sight in at 10 but hunt at 2.5x

Also, the 4200 has the brightest, clearest optics I could find and that includes the high dollar stuff.

It isn't just the magnification that's the issue. Sometimes, the light gathering you want comes in a scope that may seem like overkill.

i've worked with a 2.5 - 10 x 50 Pro 50 by Simmons, on an NEF Handi Rifle in .223.   yeah, more power than is needed.....but the light gathering of the scope is Excellent.

i hope your rig does all....and more than....you want it to.

BTW: in Pocahontas county in the Monongahela it can be pretty close many times; but it can also open up to more than 250 yds' for a shot.   i won't be going back there anymore i don't think.  too many deer shot out and frozen out.   but it's an observation about differing conditions within just a short drive off route 219.

good hunting to you,

The 50 mm objective lens was designed for night shooting. Yes, on the continent it is possible to hunt, at least, wild boar at night. It is done from shooting stands, where there are chairs and benches. Otherwise they make the rifle top heavy and that is conducive to canting, which does nothing good for accuracy, as it isn't repeatable. On your rifle it looks like it'll pull your head off the stock, which will increase the felt recoil. Yes it'll gather a lot of light, but only so much can be used by your eye. A 2x7x32 sat at 5x will transmit all the light your eye can make use of.

To reply to some of the posts here.  This gun was bought just for looks, and I always liked the Redfield Illuminator.  I got the Weatherby for $425.  I do not think it is the "perfect rifle/scope" combo for my area.  My fav. DeerSlayer is my Remington 742  30-06 topped with a Redfield Illuminator 3-9 Widefield.  How can it get any better than that?  Actually for the past few years I been using my big ten inch Ruger.  It's alot of fun too!

i can't possibly imagine having more fun, and more of a sense of accomplishment than taking a deer at 100 to maybe 120 yds' with a Ruger (SBH it looks like?).   i've seen deer dropped at 200 yds' with the right bullet from a .223 by a nuisance hunter i know.   but i suspect that drilling a decent buck at 100 yds' would mean even more with an open-sighted revolver.

let us know how you do this year.

take care,

I don't so much have a problem using 50mm objectives scopes, but I do have a pesonal objection to the use of one piece scope bases as this set-up uses only a 3 screw set-up rather than 4 screws with a 2-base set-up.

Still, it's a great rifle and I'm sure that you are going to enjoy the heck out if it! :D

Oh my god, thats the worst setup I have ever seen, how can you possibly put that scope on a 30-06 ?
You know what, you might as well take that setup and throw it in the trash,
better yet.... why don't you ship it over to me, I'll help you get rid of it  ;D
