Mauser 98 6.5X55 Custom
« on: October 21, 2006, 06:40:53 PM »
;D I just picked up a full custom rifle for a song. Built on a 98 action with 24 inch Douglas tube, 2-7x40 Swift Premier scope. I have yet to take it to the range but can't wait. I love this caliber for alround use. Took my goat last year at 225 single shot thru the lungs, then like stone head I sold that rifle. This beauty will stay in the safe from now on. I found it on sale for $ 310 I saved $ 150 because it was on sale. I let u know how it shoots in a couple of weeks. Deer hunt next weekend.  Jess :o

I am soooo jealous.  I like my 96 actions but I wold certainly prefer a 98 in 6.5 Swede.  Hey, come to mention it I do happen to have a spare 98 hangin' around - its a VZ/CZ 24/52.  I have a bunch of 8mms but I do not (yet) have a 98 in 6.5.   Hmmmm, now ya got me thinkin'.  Mikey.

??? Got the rifle scoped it in the mounts provided and can't gett enough adjustment on the scope to get proper eye relief. I am stumped on how to fix the problem short of getting another rifle. Any cleaver ideas I know i dont. Jess

What mounts are you using?  You can get extension basses or rings to fix that problem.

Bigboar - thanks.  That was just what I was going to tell him.  He should be able to find something like that right at Brownells I think.  Mikey.

;D Genltemen it was an easy fix, I changed scopes. I went to a 2.5-7 Weaver K7 of mine and the problem was solved. My eye relief is perfect. My mounts are Leupold 1 pc.  Jess

A small shank 6.5x55 Swede barrel fits into a Turkish Mauser (large ring) action. That is what I am going to build on. I need a Tweed. Think what you like about the Turks, but that is what I will be using.

;D I finally took the rifle to the range and all I can say is WOW :o :o :o. I put an ole Weaver V7 on top and it took 4 rounds to get it sighted in. My last 4 3 shot groups ran 1", 3/4" and the last 2, 3/8" at 100yds. Shot one 200 yard group right at 2 inches center. Not to bad for the rifle or me. I used Federal Blue box 140's I can't wait to see what this rilfe will do with good handloads. I know for sure I have a keeper.  Jess

That sounds about right for the 6.5 Swede.  It's a great caliber.  My Swede carries a Bushnell 1.5x4.5 x32 and gives me snake-eyes at 150.  This spring I hope to set up a longer distance range on some farm property I have and see how she shoots out to 4-500 yds., and I haven't started reloading for it yet.  Good on ya.  Mikey.

Sweet find, Jess.  I'm jealous.  I'm working on a VZ24 in 25-06 right now.  I've always wanted a Swede, though.

Duckbill - my local shop came into possession of a custom Mannlicher Schoneur(? sp) in 6.5-06 and man was I droolin'.  She carries a 24" octoganal to round barrel and feels like it weighs a whole bunch more than your standard Mauser action would.  Ah well, it was way beyond my reach ($) but I drooled none the less.

I have been thinking about re-doing my VZ24/52 and have thought of either the 6.5 Swede or the 6.5-06.  Unless I intend to hunt large, heavy dangerous critters the Swede will do what I want.  Soooooooo, who knows - maybe the VZ will get 're-done' someday.  Mikey.

Mikey,
I usually just strap on a bib before walking into most gun shops.  On my budget all I can do is drool. :'(

My mauser project has actually been pretty low-budget so far.  It's fully functional at this point and I'm into it for just over $300 without the scope.

Duckbill - thanks for the laugh.

Your Mauser project sounds pretty good so far and the cost is in the ballpark for a good sporterization of a Mauser.

I know how you feel about the Swedes - they are sweet shooters and my sporterized M38 is just one of those honeys, lemme tellya.  But I spent way more than I should have on that - a significant part of the overall price tag was the stock that I had to wait 6 months for.  However, a 96/38 is a 96 Mauser and that firing pin sure has a long way to travel to detonate the primer.  Not so with the 98 action and I'm thinkin' about having the vz24/52 re-done (she sure is smooth) to a 6.5 but I can't shoot both at the same time so I dunno.

I would really like to find a way to customize my Ljungman with a nice stock and scope.  Now that would be a project....................... Mikey.

;D This is a cold subject but thougt i'd make a range report on todays session at the range. I finally settled on the Mueller 3-10x44
for my scope. I was using the Privi Partizan 140 gr SP.  The distance was  100 yds off sand bags. I shot 7 three shot groups

1. 1 in.
2. 1/2 in
3. 1/2 in
4. 3/4 in
5. 3/8 in
6. 3/8"
7. 1/2"  This is the single most accurate rifle I have ever pulled a trigger on. Frankly this is as good as i can shoot. The 2 1/2# trigger pull sure helps. I want to load the Nosler for my primary hunting load and hope it groups like the Privi's do. This is one rifle that will stay in the safe until it passes to one of my kids.Just thought you'd like to know. Jess :o :o :o :o

hello
I like the 6.5 it is great for coyotes and deer at medium ranges i dont shoot it much because i dont have a good supply/supplier for the 6.5. By the way has anyone of you guys heard of alpine model custom, they are mauser 98 action and they are made by firearms co ltd in englnad. they were imported by Mandell shooting suplies. I found that out from a 78 gun digest book.

Aim surplus sells the Privi Partizan ammo and it is very good ammo. My custom 98 put three shoots inside an inch at 100 yards and Sunday place 3 shots at 1 1/4 inches at 200 yards and 3 other 3 shot groups ran under 2 inches. Its cheap has reloadanle brass. Go tp www.aimsurplus.com.  Jess
