Antelopes beware!
« on: October 19, 2006, 12:15:38 PM »
Off tonight for an antelope/prairie dog hunt this weekend, I'll let you know how it goes.

I'll be using my handi 270, varmint stock, 100 grain hornady soft point handloads at 3400fps....

Matt
Good Luck!  To bad the .243 barrel I sold you could not be properly broke in on this trip too.
Let me know when you have it and how it shoots.

You know, we spend all this time and thought concerning 350 yard antelope shots....  got him at 65 yards after a quick stalk through a ravine.  Bang-flop, never took a step.  First antelope!

Yup, the dogs also "lost"  I used my handi hornet with some really nice reloads.  Also used my NEF 17 HMR which I liked.  But I primarily used my old standby for the dogs.  My Ruger #1 in 223 with some really nasty 40 grain v-max going way too fast.  The results were explosive.  Here's where we were:

Yes, you never know about Antelope hunting. I shot my best Buck to date at an unexpected 85 yards. I started over a rise & he was laying down
facing away. I shot him before he got up. I filled my Doe tag the next day at 404 yards. I think Antelope is more fun than any other Big Game Hunt.

Congrats on you hunt!!!
