11-87, which choke improved or rifled?
« on: October 19, 2006, 04:32:53 AM »
New to the slug gun hunting game and was wondering which type choke to buy. The 11-87 I have is a special purpose Turkey gun. I'm wanting to deer hunt with it this year but am confused as to which choke to buy. Does the rifled choke really add that much acuracy? Which slug rifled or sabot to shoot with each? I realize that these are basic questions, but Ohio deer season is not that far off and I want to start getting ready.

Thanks
Tom

I have a rifled choke tube for my 870 using regular foster type slugs it cut the group size by half over an improved cylinder choke tube.  At 50 yards with a 4X scope it will shoot into about 1 inch and will shoot into 4 inches at 100 yards.  I know that is not great for the fully rifled sabot shooting guns but it is still a dead deer and where I use the shotgun at 50 yards is a long shot.

Rifled choke tube and buckhammer slugs are pretty accurate. Tried copper solids in my rig and they went sideways through the target. Sabots? Too expensive and not enough accuracy to make it worth while. I ended up with buckhammers as the slug my gun likes. YMMV.

My SP deer gun came with the rifled choke in it and also with a modified tube.  I have never changed the tube.  The rifled tube will shoot home loaded Lee foster type slugs in 3” group at 50 yards with a red dot sight.  This is plenty good for where I would use it.  As I rarely use it to deer hunt anymore, moved to Missouri Ozarks, my present thought is to get a ‘turkey choke tube’ and use it on them next year.

Would you believe it !!!  I contacted Remington on 2 ocassions to see if I could buy a SP10 in 10 ga. to shoot slug out of , and thus would need a cylinder choke insert . The reply was that they could not sell me a cylinder choke insert with the gun and supplied me with a list of 4 after market dealers .
Problem is I believe only Remington do a 10ga. pump .
