Did the unthinkable the other day.
« on: October 17, 2006, 09:45:00 PM »
Was looking through the rifles at the local dealer---come to one marked down to $399 from $459 in the youth rifle section---look at the muzzle----hhhmmm that's kind of a big hole(most all the rifles in that section are .243's)---pick it up---its a Remington Model 7 Youth Synthetic in 7mm-08-----and at that price its much cheaper than the Ruger's--Tikka's etc. Such a sweet little rifle and the price is right---I bought it. Have been looking for a 7mm-08 for a while now too.

Came with iron sights and an R3 recoil pad---and the barrel is actually free floated---a dollar bill goes all the way to the action and the stock is nice and stiff. Has the key lock--barf!!!

This is after all the bad luck I've had with Remingtons in the past---hoping I finally got a good one----I've pretty much swore off and at Remington---I can't believe I actually bought this----lets just say this is their last final chance to do right by me. But this is such a sweet little rifle.

Saving up for a decent scope--so it probably won't see use this season----range report when I get everything put together---when I get around to it.

Sounds like a good deal to me. I'd have been sorely tempted myself. I think it will probably work out for you. I hope to find a left-hand version like that.

Good luck with yours.  I haven't had very good experiences with Remington lately, either, but there's hope!  I've bought a couple more since my sour one - haven't had a chance to shoot any of them yet.

Dont forget that as a youth model the stock will be shorter.  If you are a big guy, you will be somewhat crumbled up around the stock.  I hope it works out for you because those 20 inch barrels are real nice walking in brushy areas.

With your attitude, why bother???  Just send it to me.  I'll put the pressure point back where it belongs, tune the trigger and have it shooting inside of an inch in no time.
I'll use a T10 to develope a load for it and then mount a nice looking 1.5x5 or 2x7 on it.  Good to go for anything from elk (in a pinch) on down.   ;D  ;D
Knock on wood, but I'm glad you guys have been using up all the bad luck from Remington 'cause I'm still on a roll.
I've been slobbering over that Model 7 in the custom shop with the mannlicher stock in .260.

If that rifle wouldn't have such a hefty price tag on it, I'd get one of those Mannlichers myself.  I swore off buying another rifle because I have no room left, but if Remington ever makes that Model 7 Mannlicher available as a regular production rifle, I will buy one, in say a .350 Mag.  I would sell something to make room for that one.

But I won't hold my breath.

A local retailer has a 673 in .350mag discounted to $599 if you are interested in something similar to a Model 7.

Thanks OBG, but I have access to 673's in .350 Mag.  What I was looking for was a Mannlicher like the Custom Shop builds, but without the hefty price tag.  I think that Mannlicher in the Custom shop is a 20 inch barrel, the 673's are 22 inch.  I always wanted a Mannlicher, and I know exactly what  beemanbeme means about slobbering over it on the Remignton Website.

Three things keep me from ordering one.

I won't put up with the Attitudes I hear about from those guys in the Custom Shop.  (They have a reputation, and it isn't good.)

I don't want to wait a year and a half for it to ship.

And I don't want to pay that price. (Or more.  They hardly ever end up costing what the quote is.)

I have never been a big Rem fan myself.  But bought 2 of em this year, one in 270 and the other in 7m-08.  I gotta say that both rifles are excellent after a trigger job.  Accuracy is as good as I could ask with fit and finish very nice also.  I would not be afraid to get another in the future.

Being that I've been working 7 days a week for nearly a month now--I haven't had time to do much of anything lately----I do have it scoped up with a Leupold 2x7x33--Leupold QRW quick detach rings and Warne bases---and picked up a set of RCBS dies from Midway----but I don't have any components or even a box of factory ammo yet.

The way its looking --I probably won't get to shoot it till the Thanksgiving holiday---and thats assuming the weather holds out---not good sighting in --in a snowstorm or something similar.

Haven't messed with trigger yet either----its a solid 6lbs now---I'd like to get it into the 3-4lb range----and that's all while still trying to do things with my kids and life in general.

Like I said before---when I get around to it.

Lord that's one ugly stock. But as the Romans used to say, "Taste cannot be disputed".  :P
