Ideas for new Mauser project.

I have an old DWM Mauser action sitting here looking for a new life. Used to have a .30'06 barrel screwed on to it. The action is better suited to 57 mm length rounds of course, but it's adaptable. I'm keeping the original bolt face, so magnums are  totally out.( I have a Win model 70 Mag. action I still havn't figured out what to do with. ;)) I'm leaning towards building a lightweight deer hunting woods gun. Any and all ideas are welcome.

Light in Caliber or weight?

Hard to beat a featherweight carbine in anything from cartridges with the same size base from .257 Roberts to 8x57.
I have a G33-40 in 8mm that weighs 6.5 pounds with scope. 18" barrel. Can lug it all day.
The factory ammo is anemic but if you handload the 8mm is a hot .308 that can handle heavy bullets if needed.

For fun - I might try a 338-06 or a .35 Whelen.

This may not mesh with your thinking but...

a rimless 444 Marlin.  Stock it however you want.  Mauser's CRF makes it a nice package with a big caliber cartridge.

or something like the 375 Hawk or 400 Hawk, both (actually all 3) based on 06 brass.

Just some ideas.

Good Ideas from all, and I'm open to more. One question for StrawHat, where would a rimless .444 Marlin headspace? Seems like there would be no neck.

Hmm how about a .358 win with a 20-22" barrel nice handy and fairly light with a nice bore for a wallop but can still use .358 Pistol bullets for light stuff  ;)

   If not the ole 7mm Mause is really hard to beat especially in and action designed for it.

If I wanted to shoot pistol bullets, I'd use a pistol. ;).
I have always had an itch for a .358, but a 9x57 would be a better match for the action.
And the .257, 6.5mm, and 7mm, are good possibilities. I want to give this gun to my son after a couple of seasons use.
The more I try to decide, the harder it gets! ???

Even with the big one, if properly set up there are no problems.  I have fired a Browning 1895 in the 411 and had no problems.  A Mauser would be more of the same only better.

Soory about the delay in answering, you have probably settled your project by now.

7x57, 21" barrel (yeah, I have to be different   ;)), maybe a #2 contour, classic walnut if you want pretty, synthetic if you want to hunt hard and light.  Use a #3 contour barrele if you'd like a bit more stability.  I'd go with a aftermarket trigger with a side safety, probably, but I like the Winchester style wing safety too.

I'm in the middle of building another 7x57 on a M98 using a 20in barrel, timney trigger, sunny hill bolt shroud and Hogue rubber stock.  I like my rifles on the short side, only thing I would change in what I'm building is to go longer on the barrel.  The good thing about going with the 7x57 is that it will feed like it should.  308 might give you some grief, but 30-06 will work as well as most suggested.  Easy to say, but go with what you like, throw it out there and let everyone give opinions.

How bout a good ol fashioned 7mm-08 with a 22" tube?  Great whitetail caliber, very little recoil and it meets your case length needs.

If you want to stay "traditional" with your mauser action, make it into a 7x57 or a 8x57 (which may be one of the better but overlooked deer cartridges); if you just want an excellent deer rifle, make it into a 7-08.

What about the .244 with a fast twist, 22" #2 contour, slim walnut stock with a lot of figure. I think I just had an idea.

This was my last Mauser project.  I have thought about a new stock for it but it shot so good I just decided to leave it alone.  There isn't anything wrong with the 6.5x55 or the 7x57 for a good hunting round. (I have not tried the 8mm but see no reason why it wouldn't work as well.
