T3, 6.5-55 at the range
« on: October 15, 2006, 03:55:11 PM »
Well this is really getting to be fun!  This firearm, caliber, and custom handload( 140 Nosler Partition over a stout dose of RL-22).  Three consecutive shots today from 50yds, 100yds, and 200yds.  You guessed it 3 center punch bulls eyes!!!  I am not this good.  God this caliber and firearm are awesome!!!  The shooter next station to me was smacking a major magnum into a 2" circle at 100yds.  I could feel the air concussion with my glasses and ear muffs on.  Just a great day, weather, shooting and such.   Buckfever

Buckfever,

You've got a great cartridge all right, but also don't forget......you're shooting a Tikka. ;)

I have a couple of questions I hope you will answer. How stout the load? Are you seating to spec COL.
I have reloaded for the same combination.I have used Nosler 120BT,Hornady 140Amax and Speer 140GS.The only powder I have used is IMR 4895.The NoslerBT may have been the best but it's hard to say,all group well.I am thinking of developing a Partition load and would like a place to start.Did you work the load up from the bottom?I found the Speer to print better with a charge on the light side, the jury is still out on that because I'm still playing with seating depth and load charges.I'm going to have to stop sometime, just about any load shoots great.

Tha COL is .005 off of the lans.  RL-22 was recommended in Handloader magazine.  I started at 42gr. and worked up 46.5 where this firearm turned in some real tight groups. Velocity is 2650fps.  It could go faster but why hot rod a great caliber when it is this accurate.  Tikka T-3 22 1/2 inch barrel.  It just works well.

From what little I know about COL is it is very specific to the firearm you have.  My Tikka is very long throated so it may be different than another brand.  Try the technique where you fit a bullet loose in the case  with majic marker on the bullet.  Chamber the round.  As you close it it will fit right on the lans.  Then back it off the desired amount and there you have it specific to your firearm.  Read one of the reloading manuals because some of them outline this procedure.  Now mine is 3.113 inches after all that.  Remember this can be dangerous stuff, please match to your firearm.    Buckfever

Understood,I have a T3 Hunter as well.I was curious how that bullet compares to the type I measured for.I 'm not convinced this is as important in a T3(seating depth) as other brands(that don't shoot already).
