A Mauser action with iron sights?
« on: October 15, 2006, 12:01:41 PM »

My son is looking hard and shopping hard. He wants a .30-06 with a Mauser action that has factory iron sights as well as the ability to mount a scope. It seems that now days this has gone the way of high button shoes.

Does any one know of a new rifle like this?

Ruger 77mkII is an updated Mauser style action that comes in many variations with or without sights.   The Remington 798 is a Mauser action without sights, but they can be added.

Unless he is concidering ghost ring aperture post front sights, forget irons. XS sights can set you up with irons. Otherwise, stick with the telescope: fixed, not over 4X
If you can get closer, get closer
If you can get steadier, get steadier.

A telescope helps you see; it does not help you hold and squeeze.-Jeff Cooper

Go Ruger for a factory rifle, or go custom. I am going ruger for my new rifle, international in .308 but, I have irons on my mauser rifle ,a williams rear peep sight it's great the only thing  i ever needed.  My two thumbs up for taking the different route and not using a scope, I almost think it is the easy way out nowadays. Keep up the good fight for irons.

Ruger and CZ make rifles that are EXACTLY what he is looking for. The CZ 550 FS and the Ruger Model 77 International both are offered in .30-06 and come equipped with iron sights. I personally have the Ruger International, and have added an excellent receiver-mounted peep sight from New England Custom Gun. Check out Ruger and CZ's websites for more info.

I've been looking at the Ruger 77 International for myself. I like the looks of the Ruger. The CZ has a set trigger which is nice but it also doesn't seem as nice and slick as the Ruger. I wish CZ would do something with the area around front of the trigger guards and get rid of those detachable magazines all together.

Well try  looking at different modle CZ's as only the 527 has the visable drop mag. The 550 has a flush floorplate mag just like the olde 600/601/602 models.
