winchester dropping 25 wssm cartridge production?????
« on: October 15, 2006, 11:14:58 AM »
Heard a rumor that winchester is dropping the 25 wssm ???
As far as I'm concerned this was the most useful of the three. Has anyone else heard anything about this?
Guess I should start looking for brass if this is the case >:(

I didn't really see the 25 wssm solving any problems that the other 25s couldn't solve

Kenscot, if this is true, I share your disappointment.  I'm a quarter-bore fan and flirted with the idea of a Browning A-Bolt in .25 WSSM.  I read enough on this site about feeding problems with the Browning that I decided against it.  The Winchester model 70 didn't come in a lefty rifle for this caliber so I never considered the M70.

You're right; it doesn't do anything other .25s can't do.  Thankfully, we don't eliminate cartridges that fail to offer anything significantly different from existing rounds.  If we did we'd only have a handful to choose from and I'm all for variety! ;D

This is just my opinion but , I never seen any advantage with any of the short mags. Other than a short action, the rounds don't offer anything more than over priced ammo. When they first came out I did a lot of research on the short mags, if they had offered any advantage, I would of jumped on them. But most of the guys I know also feel the same way.

I haven't seen such a rumor, but these things are seldom widely announced. If I spot something, I'll update this forum.

Does this mean that the wssm rifle is looseing taste or that Winchester's going out of business
caused that. I don't shoot that rifle.

Mine shoots OK but I'm going to be trying .257 velocities soon.
It is no .25-06 as implied in the advertising,
Have the Super Shadow and it's light and deer hunting accurate with handloaded 120 NPTs.
I bought lots of brass.

Errrrrrr yeah I am some what surprised. To me this is the one WSSM that had some merit. I like 25-06 ballistics out of the shorter case.
I thought if any of them would have fallen first it would have been the 223 WSSM  which is right there 22-250 and won't beat the swift.
They still produce the 307 winchester, how high can that be in sales. Heck they still make 303's ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Yep they make .303 British cartridges because they are useful and they sell. It appears neither really applies to the .25WSM ;)

Oh of course I AM biased towards the .303 as I have a few of them  ;D including an Improved .303 which was done to get around a tight chamber problem other wise I wouldn't have bothered.

I cannot personally see the big deal about "Short" actions  ??? even though I am working on a shortened .303/308 wildcat however seeing as our club range is only 75 Meters (84 yards) a shortened improved case will be excellent for the short range and use less powder for practice. The action is normal length as I am using a Large frame Martini.

Yep the 303's WERE useful way back when and I guess they still need to produce anemic cartridges for all those inaccurate relics out there ;D
Well since ya shot down my latest pet cartridge I figured a little shot at the 303 would get your attenion! All in good fun ;)
I don't think it is sales that is killing the 25wssm. After talking to tech reps at sierra and rcbs there has been problems with pressure spikes and inconsistent brass, very thick case necks.
First hand experience is that it is a headache to reload  :( hope they get it straightened out but I guess I could always get rcbs to make me a great big expander ball and rebarrel to something like 303 ;)

What?! the laws of economics don't apply to ammunition mfg. I garuetee you that if the 25 wssm sold remchester would work out whatever problems has arisen. "Still produces 303"  You betchya I'ed bet money that there more rifles chambered for 303 British here in Arkansas alone than ever will be chambered for any wssm world wide.  Heck what rifles can you buy chambered in a WSSM currently?
I don't know why this is such a big revelation (Kinda like when people found out that Elton John is gay) ::)  The WSM series are having enough trouble by themselves the WSSM's are just comparative also rans. Look for the WSSM to join cartriges like 5mm Rem, 348win, 7-30 waters 256 win mag  and  the TROUND in firearms obscruity.

Before long people will be asking what cartriges share the same casehead size with the wssm's ;)

If they do drop it just rebarrel to 257 roberts, all will be well again for another 50 years or so.  JIM

Does anyone have information from Winchester Ammunition, or Browning/Winchester Firearms to substantiate or quash this rumor?
