357 accuracy question
« on: October 13, 2006, 04:31:35 AM »
How accurate are the 357 Magnum Handi barrels?  Anyone shoot 38 specials in theirs?  I'm thinking about getting one.

I get 1/2 to 1 inch groups at 50 yds with a 2 power scope 125 gr and 150 gr hard cast bullets.  #8 work about the same I just load the 357 cases lower.  You won't be disappointed also  I love the low recoil.

WE have got my dad's magnum shooting 1.5" groups at 100 yards with factory ammo.  He loves it.  and my max shoots great as well up to 150 yards or so.

I would second the sugestion of the lower charge in the standard 357 brass. The results on the recoil front will be the same as useing the shorter 38 brass without the worries of marring the chamber.       D.C.

Plus it gets the bullet closer to the leade, decreasing the jump distance.

I shoot from .38 Special to .360 DW in my standard .357 Mag barrel.  It doesn't seem to make much difference in accuracy, they will all shoot close to 1" at 100 yards.  I also shoot from 125 gr (2200 fps) to 250 gr (1200 fps).

The 170 gr Keith bullet (Lyman 358429) will clock 1750 fps out of .38 Special brass using the "Keith .38/44 HD load" of 13.5 gr 2400 with a standard primer.  Using Elmer's 15.5 gr of 2400 with the same bullet in .357 brass may shoot a little faster, but the .38s are fast enough for my purposes.  ;D
