I started something like this on athe bolt rifle forum and am truly thinking of having one bolt and build the battery around the Handi's here are my ideas any ideas wouldbe appericiated.

Elk: Remington 700SPS 300WSM 3-9X40 Muller Sportdot
Elk2: 35 Whelen Handi 2-7X40 Swift Premier
Deer: 270 or 280 for Combo Rifle
Deer@; Handi in 7mm-08 3-9X40 Muller Sport Dot
Antelope: Ultra in 25-06 6X Weaver K
Varmints: 223/22-250 Ultra Varmint Fluted both with Banner 4-12X40
What do ya thinK

The cost of this battery is in line with my pay

Never one to stand in the way of somebody buying guns, but you could cover an awful lot of that country with a 35 whelen and a 243.

I have taken one of my frames and done kinda the same thing , a Handi combo gun .

1 223 bull barrel with a 6x24x50

2 45/70 with a4x40

3 20ga. mod barrel

4 12ga Tracker 1 smooth bore with iron sights

I keep all 4 barrels in a case with the frame

I think the .30-06 and a .223 would cover nearly everything in North America. A .22 Long Rifle &/or a 12 gauge would complete the set.

I have whittled down my arsenal somewhat over the past few years...but..mine consist of the following I feel best suits my hunting/shooting needs..

1) Marlin 1895 XLR 45-70 with a Leupold 2x7x33 VX-1

2) A 26" Ultra 25-06 and 26" Ultra 338-06 A-square fitted on 1 frame with a Leupold 4x12x40 VX-1 on the 338...and a Burris 3x9x40 BP on the 25-06..

3) Soon to have a 26" fully customized Ultra 270 Winchester on it's own dedicated frame(as soon as Wayne finishes it)...This one will get a Ziess Conquest scope and Talley rings I think sometime after the holiday season..

4) Also sometime next year...there will be 1 more custom caliber...and in all likelyhood 2 more factory barrels being added...While not needed...I certainly am wanting just to have..

john barsness seems like a well-thought-out kind of writer. he believes the .270, .280, and .30-06 are good on elk to 300 yds. with proper bullets i greatly believe that. even further with something like a boat-tailed 140 gr' Hornady in the .270, or the boat-tailed 139 gr' Hornady inthe .280. in the .30-06 i'd go with a Spire Point to 300 yds' of maybe 165 gr's weight. (but none of these would be 'Texas heart shots on either elk or deer!). they'd all take antelope and deer to 300 yds' very readily.

the Handi' in a 26" barrel with a boat-tailed Spire Point (hornady) should be good on elk to maybe 400 yds' if you can dope the wind properly and so on. no, that's not a likely shot for me; but it would be one heck of a cartridge in a great barrel length.

for varmints i'd get a .22-250.

you'll save money and you'll have what you need with only two rifles.

hello, i really think that if push came to shove three cailber's would do it...223..243 or 25/06...30/06...everything around & in between is for fun !! on a side note the glass used is equally important...

Perhaps just a 12 gauge would be all anyone would need. It can kill anything when properly loaded.

yes on the twelve gauge, but a normal shot for me is two hundred on deer so.... i am more comfortable with a rifle. and if you are wanting two or three guns to do it all, a 7mm rem mag would cover the big stuff except for big bears pretty much

Well I thought I had this worked out and then my*&^*^*^&^&%%^&&$ truck blew it's engine and now it's new truck time. My budget went from $ 2500.00 down to About $ 1500, so my for sure battery went to heck and back. here is what I have decided to do:

1. 30-06 Ultra 3-9X40 Mueller Sport Dot

2. 25-06 Ultra 6X Weaver K6

3. 223 Ultra Varmint 4-12X40 Banner
With these three and a Bolt gun in 06 I'll be set for many years. Does this sound like a plan or would u tweak it? Jess

I started building my battey last year so far I have a

204 handi for coyotes

243 ultra for deer and coyotes

10ga with a 22" barrle with chke tudes for turkey and waterfowl and coyotes

my next ones are a BC 45-70, a 22-250 barrel, 270 barrel, and probably more after that. I reload every thing I shoot, so thats the other fun part of owning so many differnt calibures

I would tweak it

Since you already have a bolt gun in o6'..why not go for something different??....Say a nice 45-70 to play with instead of doubling up ...

Sorry to hear about your truck problems...I've had my fair share of the same thing this year...

I know truck issues. A new one might not solve them either. I have an '06 GMC with 2K on the clock and it's soon to go back for it's third trip.

They already replaced a whinning power steering pump and now this thing makes some sort of harmonic vibration noise that is hard to figure out.

This trip I'm going to have the service mgr do a ride along so I can be sure they hear the problem.

You'd think GM, for 30K could put out a truck WITHOUT all the issues.

I would tweak it Since you already have a bolt gun in o6'..why not go for something different??....Say a nice 45-70 to play with instead of doubling up ...

The Whelen would be a dandy one too to have(even better if they make the 26" barrels available again

)...Mattparliment is geeting some awsome velocities with his...and some excellent groups too...I'm not a fan of the ATR...My gun dealer has had a bunch of them come back...and they aren't near as good a value as what the Stevens is...With the Stevens...when money allows...you can upgrade them to be just about anything you want with readily available factory replacement parts...take off barrels...stocks...bolts...ect..ect......and they have been getting excellent accuracy from them as well...I say go for a Stevens if available to you...Some folks say they are the Handi's of the bolt guns...

if it was me, and this is just my opinion, but i would drop the 30 06 since you already have one. i would also switch the 223 for a 204. i think instead of the 30 06 (since the 25 06 is plenty big for deer in my opinion, maybe get a 17 hmr for something a little cheaper to shoot? so this would leave you with.....
1. 30 06 bolt gun (and i would go with the stevens, just my .02) deer and elk
2. 25 06 for long range coyotes and deer (this is soon to be my go to for deer)
3. 204 ruger for regular/long range varmints
4. 17 hmr for varmits out to roughly 200 (im thinkin short range p dog gun)

but these are just my opinions take them for what they are worth

The 30/06 will do everything and more that the 25/06 will do.

223 or 204 for varminting.

30/06 for long range varminting and up to elk/moose

12 gauge!!

3. 223 Ultra Fluted 4-12X40 Banner or a Mueller 4.5-14X40

And the only non Handi a 6.5X55 Custom 98 Mauser with a Weaver 2.5X7 this is the one rifle that is here to stay. I mentioned my truck problems, I purchased a 07 Honda Element instead of a pickup. Jess

I think the .30-06 could have replaced both of these.

The .223 is an excellent choice.

Y'All have some good ideas.

I got a youth 20ga Pardner recently and after plinking around some garbage with some clay loads, I honestly think I could feed the tribe with it.

Long shots? No. But birds, rabbits, squirrels, deer, yes deer where I hunt, fish, yes fish where I hunt, racoons, dogs, cats, etc. All easy pray to the 'lil old 20ga.

It's not dramatic or high tech or the coolest thing around, and it definately isn't a sniper setup, but it's the one that will never, ever be left behind, and will always be within reach where I live. It's got 3" #2 buck shot in it for home duty, and nothing that can get in here can survive that.

What's not to like about it?

Well now that my money is finally confirmed I can finally put my battery together.

1. 35 Whelen 2-7X40 Swift Premier will change to Choate Varmint stock (ugly as a post but fits me well)
2. 308 Ultra 3-9X40 Swift premier
3. 25-06 Ultra 4-12X40 Swift Premier
4. 223 Ultra Fluted 4.5-14X40 Mueller APV
5. my only non Handi a Custom 98 Mauser with Leupold Vari X II 3-9X40 in 6.5X55
I will eventually pick up another bolt for my Primary elk gun somethoing in the 300Win/300WSM and never look back
