ten point pro elite package from cabelas

If I can get a crossbow permit to deer hunt, I am thinking about getting a ten point pro elite from cabelas

What do you guys think about this package?

what is the max range for this cross bow (listed 313 FPS)?

what type of bults shold I get?

I am very new to crossbows and need a lot of help setting this thin up.

You've picked the top of the line Tenpoint, I found the Titan TLll, to bea great xbow. 30 fps slower. It may be slower but has the same quality as the other models they make and at 1/3 the price. All xbows whether they are Excaliber Exomax at 350 fps or Barnett or Horton speed demons, an ethical hunter will limit their shots to 35 or 40 yds. Tenpoint sells carbon bolts for their xbows or you can make your own. Make sure you have flat nocks for your xbow bolts if you make your own.

Ten Point and Excaliber xbows that release from the top  reccomend the flat tip nock. A lot of guys including myself just put an insert on both ends and use an insert for a nock. It works just fine. Other xbows  that release from the bottom reccomend the half moon nocks. There is a reason on what they reccomend so what ever bow you have make sure you use the right nock. To make your own bolts or arrows what ever you wish to call them you need a fletching tool to put on the feathers or vanes and something to cut the shafts to lengh with. I use a tube cutter on my aluminum arrows I do not know what they use for the carbon shafts I suppose some sort of fine saw or maybe a cut off wheel. Lots of guys like the Arizona fletch tool as you can do all three feathers/vanes at once. Others may use the Bitzenburger ( I do just because I had one) or some other fletch tool they all work well. I found I like the super glue type glues Like Goat Tuff for putting on feathers and vanes with I seem to have better luck getting them to stick better. Then you need the nocks and or inserts to finish up the ends. Using inserts for the nock end on a Excaliber or Ten point works just fine and in most cases are easier to get than the flat nocks. Then you need a good glue for the inserts or nocks. I prefer to use the stick glue that you melt it is sold in archery shops and also used for putting on tips on fishing rods. It works well for putting in nocks and inserts. It is a dark amber color. I just put the tip of the glue stick on a flame like a torch tip and get it melted then have the insert part way in the shaft and twirl the shaft as you apply the glue stick to the insert. then I push the insert let cool and chip away any excess glue that may be on the joint. For fletching cement I have found the super glue ones to be the easiest to use and faster too. Best thing to do is look for some archery places on the net that has catalogs and order their catalogs so you can see what is available. Making your own arrows is like reloading yea you save money but you always spend it too to buy new stuff.

Thanks for the info I should have told you that I have in the past built my own arrows so I know a little about making them.

I wasnt sure if you could just cut off the nock and tapiered tip and install a flat nock and cut the arrow to size then fletch as normal.

That is a good idea about the inserts.
I now got to thinking using one ot the glue on tips where the nocks go and using the incerts as the nock.

Here is what I do since if you cut off the nock the fletching is usually too far back anyway so you have to refletch. So what I do if I am cutting down arrows to make my xbow arrows I measure and cut back from the front insert so I have a 20 inch arrow with a insert on one end then add the other insert and refletch leaving about 3/4 of an inch shaft in the back of the feathers or vanes. That way you cut off the fletching and nock with one cut and it is ready for the insert.
