Charles Daly
« on: October 11, 2006, 02:45:36 PM »
Hello All.

Just looking for some info about the Daly Field Rifle.  I saw one tonight at a local shop and it looked like a decent gun.  I'm actually considering buying it, but don't know anything about it.  It has a Mauser action, a 24" barrel and highly polished bluing.  I believe the bluing would rival that of a Rem BDL or even a Weatherby.  It had a black synthetic stock that appeared to fit pretty well.  The caliber was .30-06.  It was made in Yugoslavia.

Pro's/Con's?  Opinions?

Any info will certainly be appreciated.

Thanks

As far as I know, the Rifle you saw is no longer made as a Daly.  If you wanted to buy a new rifle like that, it would now be the Remington Model 798 and Model 799, and it would cost you alot more than the Daly's did just two years ago.  Remington has decided to Import some rifles with the Remington name on them and sell them as a Remington, at a higher price.

I am sure those new rifles meet Remingtons standards for quality and performance as much as they met Daly's standards in the past.  IMO, buying a rifle off the used rack is a smart thing to do in most cases.

The Daly rifle is the same as the Interarms MarkX and very similar to the CZ. I believe JVS is correct on it now being Remington's newest offering. If the price isn't too high, buy it. These rifles are workhorses and all that I've shot have been accurate. Most of them had adjustable or set triggers.

From what I have read, JVS and Huntswithdogs are correct.  I have read that some Interarms Mausers were bad, but I don't remember the particulars.  I have read that a lot are very reliable.  I looked at getting a Daly (2 rifles ago) then came across the WalMart M70 for $225.

One thing to remember is that Remington is looking to up their margins company wide.  The Spartan shotguns and rifles are imported from Russisa and make them easy money when sold as Remington.  The Spartan shotguns that I have seen were very well finished but we have seen 4 returns for repair on them in the past year or so.  More than one was 410.  So...."Remington's standards for quality and performance" are different for their actual products.  The rifles are made by Zastava according to the Daly website.

Locktime is supposed to be slow for all Mauser actions.

Thanks for the replies and information, everyone.

I returned to the shop, tonight for another look. The shop owner told me that he purchased some Daly rifles and shotguns over the past couple years but had a hard time selling them.  For some reason his customer base wasn't interested in the Daly line.  He moved most of what he had through gun raffles.  The one I saw was his last.  Notice I said "was".  He dropped the price to $259 and I took it.  Some of what I had read during a Google search indicated the Field rifle had 22" barrels.  This particular one has a 24" bbl.  He told me that last year he purchased a special run of .270 and .30-06 caliber's with the longer barrel and highly polished blue finish.

It's pretty oiled up.  I think I'll have to remove the action from the stock and give it a good cleaning.

FWIW the dealer told me he cannot move Tikka's either.  He commented that the Remington 710, Savage/Stevens line and Weatherby Vanguard's are his best selling rifles.

Thanks again for the info.

Well, I was leaning toward telling you NOT to buy it, but CRAP for $259 I think that it was a great deal.  For 259 you got another good bargain.  If nothing else it will be a good "woods" gun.  Congrats

I dont know why, but I never considered buying a Charles Daly gun.  I knew they were available.  Maybe because they were imported.  I cant exactly put my finger on why I never considered them.  I suppose it doesnt make much difference now if Remington is buying the same gun and putting the Remington name on it.   Welcome to the Global Economy.

I am sure they are of good quality for an imported rifle, shotgun or pistol.  I even like Daly's offerings in the Over and Under Shotguns.

As for your new .30-06, where else are you going to find a rifle for $259 in todays world.  I think that is below a private deal price.   For purchasing a new rifle, you did real well.  I would consider a Daly in any caliber over any Remington, Winchester, Savage etc. at this point for that price. You can't go wrong.

Yea, I must say I never gave much thought to owning a Daly, either. Once he told me what he would sell it to me for, I pretty much bought it on impulse.  It does appear to be a decent rifle.  The action is pretty smooth and the deep blue finish and polished bolt are very impressive.  I would be nice if it shoots as good as it looks.

Thanks again for the info and comments, guys.

Thats a pretty good price. I just bought one this last weekend in field grade w/ matt finish in 25-06 w/ a Baraska 3-12 x50 IR scope for $400 and thought I got a deal.....until now. It was NIB unfired from a private party.

bub524:  You did good.  After taxes mine was $272 OTD.  That's only $128 less than yours.  By the time I install a scope, mounts & rings, I'll have at least $400 in it.

Keep us posted on how it shoots.

Enjoy!

I just looked at the Savage rifles and they are all 22" barrels so I guess that must be a normal length. My Ruger had a 26" barrel though. I'm hoping that it will shoot well. Have to dig out some of my old brass and start making some 25-06's. I have a ton of old 270 brass. Neck it down and shorten it and it works well.

I own one of the Charles Daly Mausers and I will tell you it is not smooth like a Sako or other high end rifle, but this rifle shoots 3/4 to 1" groups at 100 yards with Hornady Ammo ( its a .270). All I did was take it to my smith and get the trigger down and smoothed up and its good to go. As i stated its no high dollar rifle ,however I only shoot it a few times a year deer hunting and for $259 it really is a fine rifle and the more I use it the action seems to be smoothing out some.

slab12:  It's very encouraging to read how well your Daly shoots.  At that price or any rifle priced in the $300 range these days, I don't expect high-end refinement.  A decent shooting rifle and good function are what I desire.  Decent looks and refinement are a plus.

coyote trapper1928:  Should I come across a mini mauser, I'll be glad to give you a heads up.

Brithunter:  Amen, brother.  Although, I have read that Remington has rectified the bolt lock-up/chamber problems that occurred with the early models.  Time will tell.

Regards
