Hornady Pennsylvania conicals
« on: October 11, 2006, 05:17:07 AM »
Hello to all...........been a while since I posted here. I'd appreciate hearing from those of you who've used these.......accuracy; terminal performance on deer-type animals,  etc., which I intend to use them on. I've got a Lyman GP Hunter in 50. It's got the fast-twist barrel on it & those didn't fare too well with stout charges of 777. This year, I've decided to hunt deer with round ball, so I ordered a 1-in-60 barrel from Midsouth Shooter's Supply......they've got em for $116 in case anyone's interested.....& I thought this Penn conical might also be a good choice, it having more bearing surface, as well as about 60grs more weight over a 50 cal RB. So any input you guys have will be appreciated, Thanx, JD45

It is a good choice outside of roundball. Good way to break-in that barrel also.

I've used those in a 1-48" with outstanding accuracy at 100 yards using only 60 gr. 777. Bring along some Baby Wipes or something wet with a paper towel or two a the range using those PA Conicals. They have the ML world's stickiest lube on them. Hard to keep your fingers clean and dry after handling those.
Keep that ML smokin'

The PA conicals are a good choice as well as the buffalo balletts. When I buy them I soak them in mineral spirits to remove all the sticky lube that they come with. Then wash them in soap and water, let dry and relube with a better, less sticky material.
I use the PA conicals in all  my lymans, the trade with 1:48 and the GPR 1:60. They are real accurate in either.

Hope your using that Lee with a substitute and not black powder since the Lee alox is petrolium based it is not good for using with black powder and even Lee does not reccomend it. I use Lee Liquid Alox with all my cast bullets with smokeless powder for my centerfires,  but for my muzzle loaders I use my own lube out of beeswax and other goodies. I leave the Alox to my centerfires and cast bullets.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Yeah, I'm using nothing but Hodgdon 777 for my GPR. Aside from less mess, it gives 10% more velocity over a like charge of BP. JD45
