Hey Folks!

Gotta new toy today, a Model 17-3. The SN is 3K84XXX. Can anyone tell me when this was made?

Thanks!

I am glad to see you want to know how old it is. I love my K 17s also but would not "date" one. Shotgunner

In light of recent news it is a good idea to know how old it is prior to dating it...

Hello Griz
By the serial you provided your K-22 shows to be a 1972. Here is a recent purchase I made also a 17-3 that was made in 1968 with the correct grips.I bought this one as it has an optional Call Gold Bead sight factory installed.  Regards, Hammerdown

Thanks guys, for all of the responses!  ;D

That's a fine looking gun Hammerdown. Mine shows a little wear on the ejector rod, but no place else. I was really amazed at the grips. Like yours, it is really a fine piece of wood, much better than on my later Smiths. However, I have a 57 (no dash) made back in the 60s, but the grips on it didn't look near as good as this one. Like the front sight on your's, too.

Mine must still be in diapers.  14K 9XXX  but since you seem to have the information available, would you mind checking this number as well?

It appears your revolver was made in 1977. I hope this is of help, Hammerdown

Thank you very much.
A good 22 handgun has always been the missing item in the safe.  I've had a couple of Rugers, revolvers and autos and S&W autos, they just didn't fill the bill.  I found this one this week and spent a bit of time everyday this week trying to negotiate a lower price (my "gun guy" will give you his bottom-dollar-tax-title-liscense-dealer prep-out-the-door price as soon as you ask, I just enjoy fussing with him) and picked it up Saturday morning.  I'm looking forward to giving this pistol a workout this afternoon.

Sun's suppose to shine here tomorrow, I'll try and give taking a picture a try.  Tis  a Mod 17-3, 6" with adjustable sights, target hammer and trigger.  It has the same grips as the old 27's, 28's and 29's.  It has a bit of blueing wear near the muzzle (holster wear?) but otherwise looks pretty good.

Forgive me for making fun, I happen to think the K 22 is one of the very finest handguns ever made. I have 3 of them. A pre-war, Outdoorsman with the round barrel and tall front sight, a 5 screw K 22 in the gold box and a standard 3 screw gun that I bought new in 1977. I have killed a truckload of game with that last one. carried while trapping and small game hunting. Woodchucks also. It taught me how to shoot a revolver. By the way, does anyone know who the "Call" from the Call gold bead was? Shotgunner

Hello Griz & Jro45
Thanks for the Kind words, on my Model 18-4 shown above. That one I just added to my K-22s and it has the Nicest finish of bluing I have seen in the Modern K-22 Line up I have but none can compare to this one from 1936, in fit finsh or smoothness. This is the GranFather of K-22s being the First edition Outdoorsman. It is wearing an original set of Roper custom Target grips that are also dated 1936 on the rear of them. Hammerdown.
