20 ga Brenneke question...
« on: October 05, 2006, 03:01:38 PM »
Has anyone had any luck shooting deer with any of the Brenneke 20 ga slugs.
I know that the 12 ga line is extensive, but I am just interested in the 20.
Looks like a better candidate than the BRI.

Thanks

Tom

Well, I guess that no one shoots 20 ga Brennekes at deer :/

Took them out to the range today and managed a group <1.5" at 50 yds so I may have to try them unless I get around to reloading.  Have to try them at 100yds before the end of the week.
So far no leading either.

Tom,

The Brennekes are some very good slugs, but I only have experience with the 12 ga ones. Are you talking about the MP slug or which one? My sons 870 loves the old MP's but I think the Rottweil Brennekes have been discontinued. You can occasionally find them. The Brenneke USA slugs did not fare as well in his gun.

They sure cut a nice hole in the whitetails though with the harder lead and sharp fins up front. Beats the Rems, Feds, and Wins Fosters all the way around in our experience. I am getting a 20ga Tracker II barrel and plan to shoot some Brennekes through it if I can find them.

What ones are you shooting? <1.5" at 50 is great for treestand hunting or still hunting. ;D

I still have a supply of Rottweil that I am using.  Hopefully I will get to the 100 yd test before week's end.
I have a tracker II in 20 ga.  (The 12 is almost unshootable due to recoil) that shoots fantastically well with Winchester Platnium tips.  I have fired it to 150yds and it groups within 3" at that range.  Shoots about 6" low to a 1" high 100 yd zero.
I have shot 2 deer with it but within 50 yds.  The bullets expand immediately so I am guessing that they will expand at the longer ranges as well.  It is possible to drill and tap the 20 ga, and if you grind the hammer and add an extention you can actually mount the scope fairly low.

Good shooting.
