.270 Weatherby-Wow!
« on: September 25, 2006, 03:47:45 PM »
I put a nice Burris 3X9 on a '84 (unfired!) vintage .270 Wby. Deluxe today.  After I boresighted the scope, I couldn't resist the urge to go to the range.  The wind was blowing a gale-but down-range, not cross-range, so I let fly.  After getting on paper, I fired a three shot group with Wby. factory 130 Hornady's.  The first group measured 7/8" @ 100 yards.  After three shots, you could have grilled burgers on the barrel, but I was impressed by the group, just the same.  After the barrel cooled considerably I fired another three rounds with a new scope adjustment:  1 and 1/8".  I was still impressed.  After a second barrel cool, I shot a group of Wby. factory 150 gr. Hornadys...7/16"!!!  That's the smallest group I've fired with any rifle I own.

I find the Deluxe a bit gaudy(sp?) for my tastes.  Can't imagine how all those shiny surfaces keep from spooking game.  And, for that matter, I much prefer a straight comb to the Wby. hump.  But, so far as I'm concerned, "pretty is as pretty does".  This is the first Wby. I've owned and I've determined that it's a keeper!  I'll have to schedule another stock job with a JRS from Boyds and maybe get a box of Nosler 150 Partns. to load.

Are there any other Wby. owners out there who have been equally impressed?

Nice. Is that a German-made Weatherby by Sauer?

Nope.  The Mark V's were built in Japan during this part of the 80's.  My only regret is that this rifle has a 24" rather than a 26" tube.  From what I read, the .270 Wby. is at its best with a couple inches more barrel to get a more efficient powder burn.  But hey, given the way this rascal shoots, I'm a happy camper.

It was love at first sight, a Weatherby .257, back in '68. Couldn't afford it. Remember all the chrome on the cars then? Ten years later I managed to pick one up at an estate sale. Looked like new, German mfg. Could never get it to group better than 2"+ with 120 gr bullets so I sold it. Didn't find out till recently those German barrels didn't have a fast enough twist to stabilize the heavier bullets. Last week while browsing Sportsmans Warehouse I spot a Mark V Ultra Lite with the sexy grooved barrel in .257 WBY. Yup, took it home and ordered a Zeiss 3-9x40 to put on it. Out of the box trigger pull is outstanding. Running a clean patch down the barrel was slicker than snot on a door knob. Can't wait to try it out.

Cool, Ahab.  Yeah, the trigger is pretty nice on this one, too.  Just a tiny bit of creep but otherwise quite crisp and light.  Glad you were reunited with a lost love.  Hope your range session goes well.

Yes, the weatherbys are nice.I have a custom .270 weatherby.I am impressed with it also.I have two baush and lomb scopes for it the kind that adjust on the base and not the scope.I think thats pretty cool.It is a very hard hitting caliber.and with the new bullets on the market today,Swift sciraccos and barnes TSX bullets.I think it can wallop anything in north america. with ease cept maybe the big bears.then I might have to warm the barrel for burgers.he he he..
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

I like mine.  I have custom shop carbon fiber stock (the one with the aluminum girder inside) on my stainless synthetic, along with a Nikon Monarch Gold 1.5 - 6 x 42 scope.  It is an expensive shoot, so I try to reload when I can.  I plan to add a muzzle brake at a Weatherby approved shop.

Just a side line the 270 weatherby was Roy Weatherby favorite round and he stated that many times saying how accurate it was must be true.  ;)

I got one 20 years now.. Stock was too fancy, but nice for the gun cabinet. I did the unthinkable then and put a $69 Ramline on it for knocking around the woods.... Wow does it shoot!!! Great deer rifle!!!

Actually the .257 was Roy's favorite, it is mentioned several times in his biography "Weatherby: The Man. The Gun. The Legend."

The statement below is from Weatherby's website:

"Roy Weatherby’s personal favorite. Travels 3,825 fps (87 grain bullet), giving you the flattest trajectory of any .25 caliber rifle in the world."

I've owned several Weatherby rifles over the last 12 years and liked them all.  I currently own a German Varmintmaster in .224 Weatherby Magnum, it is balisiticly similar to a .22-250 Remington.
