Ammo warning surplus 7,62x25 and new S&B too
« on: May 23, 2005, 10:44:37 PM »
I just read on another forum about the surplus yugo 7,62x25 having problems like split cases and spewing hot gases in the shooters face.  I have also heard of this problem with primer pockets with new S&B ammo too.( one incident)  I have also heard of the S&B ammo being inconsistant too each round crono's different nothing is the same it varies.  :(  Reading this makes me think its time to buy either better quality made ammo like from REED or reload we don't seem to have much of a choice.    These surplus guns are getting higher in cost and scarce too.  I have some fine examples to be taking chances on ammo ruining them.  There's a time to be cheap/frugal but not at the expense of a fine surplup. I think its a wake up call for not using any surplus 7,62x25 ammo and to be choosey on what new ammo we send down the pipe too.  becareful, be safe!!!!

I was going to jump on the yugo 7,62x25 but now i'm kind of shying away from it.  I was going to order more S&B and I won't do that either.

My dealer gave me a free box of the bulgie stuff which is MG ammo.

I have seen 2 mil-surps blow up while at the range. Not sure what make cartridges they were shooting though. On many occasions I have had someone shooting surplus ammo near me and you can sometimes hear the difference in the rounds; bang, pop, bang, ka-boom. The shooter himself has never been aware of the sound difference. I've asked to look at their fired brass and seen signs of low, correct and excessive pressure.

Personally, I don't fire any surplus rounds in my guns.

BigBill - thanks, that's good information to know.  Interestingly enough, the S&B shoots very accurately from my pistol but not as accurately from my 7.62x25mm insert for my 06.  Not bad, but not as accurately.

I think you're right, time to go shopping at Ron Reeds - I would like to see what consistency and accuracy his ammo provides.  Mikey.

I have never had any problems with the S&B ammo in either my CZ or my 30-06.  This is the very first time I even have heard of any.

BigBill;

Been reading the same things. I have several boxes of S&B, have shot some, haven't had any problems...yet. I agree, we need to use care in the ammo we use. I am reloading with very good results. I think this is the way I choose to go. I realize that everyone does not reload. I suggest to those folks that if they like their CZ's and their fingers, to use care in selecting ammo.

Robert - just to clarify that I wasn't having any problems with the S&B 7.62x25mm ammo in my 06, it all worked well and fired reliably from my chamber insert, it's just that the accuracy was a tad less than I expected.

I think it may have more to do with the fit of the insert (it chambers verrry easily) than variations in the ammo.  Some of the 7.62 hollowpoints I purchased from Makarov.com didn't accurize well at all and gave me 1.5" groups at 25m.  The S&B hit at around an inch but would throw one a bit every now and then.  I had hoped to use that caliber for an easy shooting varmit load from my 06 but I am concerned about the consistency (accuracy).  Maybe I should just load an 85 gn hp over a small charge of powder in an 06 case and see how that does.  Mikey.

Just be careful with reducing loads.  You probably already know....but if this is done with the wrong powder, it can blow up a firearm.  The insert that I got seems to be fairly accurate so far, but then I am not intending it for long-range varmint.  I wanted it more for close-range chicken coop patrol, and might possibly try it for deer in Urban areas.....but then, most of my deer have been 20-50 yds.
Did you see this picture?  I am doing something wrong and can't get it to post but you can click the link.  www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/album_pic.php?pic_id=911

I dissassembled some of the S&B to see just what they put in it, and found powder charges that varied from 7.8 to 9.1 gr of whatever they are using.
This could explain the issue with velocities

WOW its that much difference its not even close.  I been buying the romanian 7,62x25 by the case to put it away to shoot later.  I did reload some new brass too with jhp's too just to try.

I had a LEE PRO 1000 press given to me setup for 45acp and i hope it holds the powder charge closer than the S&B ammo.  Its quicker than anything else I ever used when i was just playing with it.  If its that good i may setup another one or buy the die trays and setup my favorite calibers.

That 7.62x25 with the rifle bullet loaded looks like
one of the 7.62 "Whisper" Cartridges that is made for silenced weapons.
They will fire a 180 Gr. projectile at just a tad over 1000 fps.
They are extremely accurate though out to about 130 yards or so.

Robert - please let me know what load that is in that picture.  I have a 7.62x25mm insert for my 06 and it is a hoot to shoot but I would like some heavy cast loads like those shown in the picture to play with.

S. Sumner - I have a 30 Luger adapter for the same 06 and was playing with some Sierra 180 gn boat tailed fmj over 4 gns of Unique and felt it was pretty accurate.  Don't know about velocity but it wasn't very fast.  The 'Whisper' people told me (e-mail response) that the 7.65mm Luger/30 Luger did well with 180 gn slugs and the 7.62x25mm did well with 200 gn slugs so I tried some 180s in the 7.65 Luger adapter.  Now I just have to get my 7.62x25mm dies and try some loads in that adapter.

Mikey.

I have a Whisper load for my 30 carbine that is a blast to shoot and is quite
accurate at short range.
