There is a very good gun shop where I live in minnesota. It's called the outdoorsmans HDQ. They well help you any way they can.  If you buy enough guns they well give you a 10% discount.I have never been turned down on trading guns. They are very fair when they make a deal. :)

is where I live, and have frequented 5 shops over decades and have yet to find a person that it did not seem I was bothering by being there. In my lifes travels I probably have been to 2 dozen other shops around the country. I almost feel like a criminal just walking in. I don't really care about a "deal" as much as I do friendly service. Its like they are doing me a favor by being in business.
Had my own FFL for a few years...loved that UPS driver.

I realize now how lucky I am, I live in southeast Iowa, and I deal ONLY with our little local gun dealer. He has been a dealer for over 30 years, and it has been and will always be a side business for him. His shop is in his basement, but it is amazing to see some of the guns he has “stuck away”.

Last year he told everyone that it was his last year as a dealer, and that he was going to close shop, it was some of the saddest news I ever got, BUT here we are a year later and he is back at it. I see now how lucky we are here in S/E Iowa to have him. If your looking for a good dealer here in Iowa let me know and I’ll send ya to him. And I hope everyone can find a dealer like him close to home.

About 20 yrs ago, SE Colo was an old crusty shop owner, shot straight with ya, made his profit I am sure.  Turned out he wasn't so crusty after all.  Had a steady flow of regulars in and out, he would sit and visit as long as you wanted.  He would try his best to steer you to whatever gun he thought would best fit what you wanted.  If he saw an obvious flaw in your want, he would gently try to suggest a better product, (which was not always more expensive).
I think he has probably passed on by now.

Found another great shop in Harlingen Texas.  Small place, but packed to the rafters.  Personally witnessed the owner handling a customer, one that didn't know much about guns, had a young son in tow, looking for a 22.  The owner brought no less than 6 22's to the counter for comparison.  Everything from $800 to $100 rifles, and then explained the virtues of each.  Was very honest about the benefits of the better ones, and explained that some of the cheaper ones were not of very good quality.  The dealer asked a lot of questions, how much would it be used, would it be used by both father and son, or son only, etc.  At the start I was only hearing this out of the corner of my ear, if you know what I mean, as I was busy looking at what interested me.  As it evolved, I took a more interested listen, off to the side, as I figured I would see who I would be dealing with.  The upshot of it was that the father and son left without buying, but I have no doubt that they went back to buy.  The owner made such an impression on me with his honest dealing, and true desire to treat the customer right, that I bought $600 worth of stuff before I left.

There are a few left, and we should support them.

How many times have you had your wife drag you to the mall?  Ever notice how many husbands are following their wives aimlessly with a thousand yard stare?  I've been one of those guys too many times myself.  I've often thought I could make my fortune if I could convince mall owners (yeah, I know - fat chance)  to let me open a chain of honest to god gunshops in malls.  The ones with a rustic atmosphere, a cast iron stove (gas flame would be ok), wooden furniture and stools, a cracker or peanut barrel (could throw the shells on the floor), free hot coffee an maybe some soda for less than a dollar a can, a rack with all the gun rags on it, another rack with books and videos of hunting and how to, and of course racks of rifles, shotguns and hand guns. Reloading supplies up the ying yang would be there along air gun supplies (maybe even have a small 10 meter range set up for firing air rifles and handguns.  There would be hunting and shooting videos available and playing.  With that many stores I would require a firearms knowledge course of instruction for salepersons relying heavily on hiring customer oriented people who are genuinely interested in firearms and shooting.  I would support and sponser matches at the local clubs, take NRA membership applications and try to get involved in firearms safety course instruction.  Just imagine how many guys would be willing to take their wives to the Mall!  Would probably create other gunowners from the other husbands wandering around.  Oh well, just in my dreams......

Let me know when you have that setup Larry and I'll move down to Tacoma, or at least come visit once a week! :)
